Fasting and feeding before surgery with an infant

Abby is having tubes put in her ears tomorrow. She has to stop eating before midnight. She usually gets her last bottle around 7:30 or 8ish. We have to be at the place at 6:30am for a 7:30am procedure. I'm wondering if we should try to wake her at say maybe 10:30 to get in some more formula (as little as it may be given her small appetite) or just let her sleep. She wakes up hungry and probably will regardless. If there are any BTDT moms with similar experiences they can share, I'd appreciate it. TIA.

Re: Fasting and feeding before surgery with an infant

DS was 6 months when he had surgery (with general anesthesia). This was the part I was the most worried about----he was to have nothing by mouth after midnight, I actually spoke to the anesthesiologist and asked if I should do this---he said it was fine. I think we got him up around 11pm, he didn't drink much (I was BF) but it made me feel less worried about, but honestly, he was such a trooper. We got him up much earlier than normal and I was surprised he wasn't freaking out to drink---once we got to the hospital, there was so much to see and they kept him pretty busy, I am not sure he cried to eat at all. I can totally sympathize though, I was soooooo worried about this, I remember crying about it as I was sure my son would be so hungry (he has always been the type to eat as soon as he wakes). Sorry so long, but any questions feel free to ask. She will do fine, I think you will be surprised!! Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

DS had surgery recently and had the same situation - nothing to eat/drink after midnight and a 9am surgery.
We kept our routine but fed him a bit more at dinner. In the morning, we kept our routine but skipped the bottle/breakfast part. We were lucky - he didn't seem to notice.

Good luck!Chat Icon

Re: Fasting and feeding before surgery with an infant

we were able to give clear liquids....so we gave an apple juice bottle once (which DS threw up b/c he was not used to juice - so don't think I would go that route again). The 2nd time I think we just gave a little water, and believe it or not, DS was much better than I thought he would be.
