Failed Glucose Test Miserably!
Anyone else failed their glucose test so badly that they need to go for diabetes counseling? :(
I was just informed of this and hope it's not going to affect the baby too much!
My original weight was 96 and am now 121 pounds at 29.5 weeks! How the hell can a person who started out skinny be diabetic!
Anybody else going through this?

I'm sorry that you failed...but I'd also like to add that I think my one leg weighs 96 pounds...wow, you're a tiny little thing! (And I mean that with all the nice-ness in the world)

Re: Failed Glucose Test Miserably!
yup! i was not considered high risk at all but here i am with GD. i had it with DD#1 and now again with DD#2. DD#1 turned out perfectly fine and healthy, which has eased my mind about the whole ordeal (i was freaked out at first).
i'm once again following the dr.'s and nutritionists orders and hopefully will have the same perfect outcome with #2.

I'm sorry!
Weight is not necessarily a factor when it comes to GD. It's all about how well your placenta can handle all the sugars.

Re: Failed Glucose Test Miserably!
Those who are overweight may be more likely to have GD, but anyone can get it. It has to do with the way your body processes sugar during pregnancy.
Did you take the 1 hour or 3 hour test? What were your numbers? I failed the 1 hour and am taking the 3 hour tomorrow. Hang in there. I know it sucks, but a lot of people go through this.

Re: Failed Glucose Test Miserably!
I don't think weight is a factor with GD - Well, I don't think being thin automatically means you won't develop it -
DH's cousin is very thin and very healthy and someone she got it w/ her 1st pregnancy -

Re: Failed Glucose Test Miserably!
I went through this with my first... Just start watching your total carbs with everything you eat. They will most likely tell you how many carbs you can have each meal and snacks... you can only have 3 meals and 3 snacks... plus you have to start testing your blood sugar when you first wake up then either an hour or 1/2 hour after you eat.
Some women even have to use insulin at night time like I had to..
If you have any questions please contact me I am sure I will have it again with this pg

I'm so scared myself, but its because I'm overweight, but I've been told that weight has nothing to do with it

Weight has nothing to do with it...
I am a very small girl.. I only weighed 117lbs when I was pg with DS and my SIL was I want to be nice and say 140-150lbs with her 1st... and 2nd and we both had GD... So it is nothing to do with weight...
Like I stated in above post.. if you watch what you eat and if you have to use insulin you will be fine.. I know it is a big PITA but by doing what the dr. said my son actually was only 6lbs 12oz at birth... well within the normal limits... if you dont watch your eating and continue eating what you want you can end up with a very large baby... and that is unhealthy for you and the baby...
I am here for anyone who has questions regarding GD... Like I said I have been through it and will most likely get it again so I have already started my diet...

Re: Failed Glucose Test Miserably!
I failed mine with DD#2 - the one hour was so high, we skipped the 3 hour all together.
I did NOT have GD with DD#1...
I am (was) also petite, so weight had nothing to do with it. I watched what I ate during the pregnancy and had to take medication at night only because my morning sugars were all over the place. It's a slight PITA to test your blood sugar 4x/day, but you definitely get used to it.
My DD was born just fine - not diabetic or hypoglycemic and well within the normal weight range (7 lbs 10 oz.).

Re: Failed Glucose Test Miserably!
YES ME! I was in total shock as well when I got the call from my doctor that I failed my 1 hour miserably as well. I don't have a family history of diabetes and I started this pregnancy at 118 lbs, I'm 5'5. I was diagnosed with it at 27 weeks. It took me a couple of weeks to get out of my little slump I went through of being so upset with the fact that I had GD. You will learn it has nothing to do with your prepregnancy weight or if you have a sweet tooth. It has to do with your hormones that are interfering with the insulin.
It truly is a blessing in disguise. It's better to take the steps now to protect your baby rather than taking any risks of hurting them. My doctors watch me so much more closely now. Beginning this week, I will see my OB every week for sonos and bio physicals. My baby is already on the bigger side, they told me this at 30 weeks. I have always been a healthy eater so the change in diet wasn't as bad as it could be for some. With the new diet the nutritionist laid out for me, my blood sugar has been good so far and I haven't had to be put on medication. My only "problem" # is my morning #, my fasting #, and this is very common, it's usually in the 90's, never above 100 though. They say as the pregnancy progresses, your numbers may be harder to control with diet and that's when some have to be put on medication/insulin.
As far as the new diet is concerned, I always loved juice, fruit, and milk this pregnancy so we had to cut those down to a minimum. Please FM with any questions. I'm going on my 6th week with the glucose monitor (testing my blood 4 times a day) and sticking to the diet the nutritionist laid out for me. I completely know how you are feeling and can answer any questions you may have. A few girls on here with GD helped me a lot when I first was diagnosed. Think of it this way, you only have to deal with in the 3rd trimester, imagine having to deal with it from day 1!

Re: Failed Glucose Test Miserably!
Thanks everyone, I'm abit reassured by your responses...
Just wondering though, were you told to eat as usual before the glucose test?
My doctor didn't mention otherwise so I ate like normal and then went for the test at 5pm. I've heard some say you're not supposed to eat any carbs and other say you're supposed to fast before your test.
Not sure what's true!
TIA!

It seems like every doctor is different. Did you only take the 1 hour test? You're definitely supposed to fast for the 3 hour one.
For the 1 hour test, my doctor said I could eat before, but I shouldn't eat anything too sugary within 1 or 2 hours of the test. However, after reading a bunch of posts on here about the test, I decided to call Quest to confirm whether I could eat. According to the lab, I could have water, but wasn't supposed to eat anything that morning. When I went for the test, the lab told a woman who had breakfast before the test that she couldn't take the test that morning.

Weight has nothing to do with it. It is how your body processes insulin. I am overweight pre preg and passed mine

Re: Failed Glucose Test Miserably!
As others said, your starting weight doesn't have anything to do with your risk of getting GD. I'm more than 100 lbs. overweight and thought for SURE I'd test positive, but I passed with flying colors.
Don't worry, there's plenty you can do to manage it until you give birth.

Every doctor is different. I was told to stay away from sugar, which I did (I didn't take the test till 5 pm). But I didn't even consider carbs and definitely ate them during the day.
Although I questioned it later on, my blood sugar levels were definitely not within normal range if I didn't stick to the diet, so I did in fact have GD.

Yes, it was only the 1 hour one. I did so badly (200+) that they didn't even bother asking me back for the 3 hour test. :(
Nobody mentioned about not eating as normal, in fact, the doctor said don't change how you eat though I did try to cut down on carbs that day...
This sux, now I have to go see a high risk doctor who can closely monitor my blood sugar level.

my dr. did, and quest labs then said they'd refuse to give me the 1 hour if I wasn't fasting. So, I fasted anyway, and failed
As for the counseling w/ a dietician, I'm fairly certain everyone diagnosed with GD gets it.... it's standard protocol
it's not that bad... no juice, soda, must test after every meal, and eat whole grains (in modest portions) instead of white flour....

Did they know you ate before? The receptionist at the lab specifically asked me if I ate anything that morning. I'd think that eating within an hour or two of the test could really affect your results. I wonder if you can ask them to re-take the 1 hour since you didn't fast at all.
