Extracirricular Activities

what do you do outside of work?

I'm always impressed by people who squeeze in all sorts of activities, clubs, classes, etc, but I'm completely wiped by the time I get home. How do you do it?

I don't do that much...
I do some gardening (have a veggie garden)
Book Club
I run every other day (mostly)
Take the dog to dog parks and walk her every morning for 1/2 hour to an hour
And that's it....

Re: Extracirricular Activities

I used to be very involved in Kiwanis, but can't find time anymore.

To be honest, life after work at night usually involves sitting on the computer on here, working on my genealogy program, reading, or going out shopping.

Re: Extracirricular Activities

Working out at the gym takes up extra time, hanging with friends, relaxing and taking care of our home, I also love to read if that counts!

Re: Extracirricular Activities

The only formal thing I do is I'm a Chairperson on a soccer league. This year I need to get more involved with the school (yes, ugh PTA).

How do I do it? I have 1.5 train ride each way into the city & my kids are in bed by 7:30pm. I have a lot of free time.

The reason I do it is to get to know the community more. Ok that's not really true. The real reason is the moms that know each other, get together with their kids. When my son was crying that he never gets to go on playdates, I felt horrible. The only playdate he gets to go on is AFTER 6:30pm when I get home. Since bedtime is at 7:30pm, it's not going to happen.

We get together a lot with our friends but they're spread out over LI. He plays with their kids & has a blast. When he goes to school, he doesn't know anyone.

Informal: I'm teaching myself photoshop. I watch Adobe Photoshop podcasts on the train.

I couldn't deal with commuting when I was 21, I have no idea how you do it with 2 kids!!!!

although, actually, now that I'm older - and probably the fact that I'm married - I really value the time I spend commuting and sometimes try to make my commute longer becuase I know I get some me time!

Re: Extracirricular Activities

Outside of working my full time job, I'm pursuing a doctorate in Instructional Leadership, and in the fall I'll be teaching a class for at-risk college freshmen.
Beyond that, I try to eat, and sleep...don't have much time for anything else, though I would like to fit in some volunteer work or mentoring.

Re: Extracirricular Activities

i have a second job (which I love) but it will always be #2 since it won't pay the bills. Lately my "spare" time is spent at the hospital with Fred.

Mostly in the summer, I go to the pool and swim laps. In the winter I ice skate and in between I'm a fatty.

I would love to go back to school and finish my degree.

Re: Extracirricular Activities

Outside of work I am working on my dissertation to complete my doctorate (it was much harder when I had to go to classes after work at night and nearly every weekend) and I usually adjunct teach one to two online master's degree courses each semester. I don't have much other free time, but DH has season tix to the Mets and likes me to go with him, and when I can fit it in Chat Icon I go to the gym (lately a rare occasion). I sometimes freelance for newspapers and magazines, but that usually takes more time than the money is worth.

I also like to shop.

DH has more actual hobbies--he is on a bowling league and on a competitive softball team.

I recently started taking a watercolor class. I love it. I am going to continue taking art courses. It is something I love to do but am now finally making time to do it. I also like to make things with seashells and go walking with my dog-around town or to different parks.

Me too!

After my 40 plus hour work week and the normal cooking, cleaning and family stuff.. I can sometimes carve out moments for the occasional book, computer, bath, gym time, shopping, pedicure and PC time.

I also am going to take up rollerblading again.
