Expiration Dates...

Am I the only one here that eats food past their expiration dates?

For instance, DH bought bagels this am, but no Cream cheese...so i looked in the fridge and voila, an unopened thing of it. And then bummer, it expired on 4/11. I opened it anyway, gave it a whiff and a lick and it was fine...

Check back with me later to make sure I'm not sick! Haha

But it got me wondering, am I the only one who does this? I do it with bread most frequently...if there's no mold on it, I'm eating it!

Re: Expiration Dates...

I am a HUGE wuss about eating anything past expiry... except bread. If it isn't moldy or hard, I'll eat it. If it's slightly stale I'll make croutons or toast or breadcrumbs.

But anything dairy.. I won't touch even if it's only a day past it's expiry. BUT.. Rob will - so it rarely goes to waste!

Re: Expiration Dates...

Eh if its unopened and didn't smell bad I think it's fine.

We have a problem with our one grocery store. They must leave the milk out b/c it goes bad before the expiration date . We always check even if its a week before it expires. It's not our fridge b/c milk fro other stores will last past the expiration date. I'll use it a few days after if it doesn't smell bad.

When I find expired stuff in my fridge it's usually salad dressing or mayo that went bad 8 months ago Chat Icon

Re: Expiration Dates...

Usually not, but I heard it is still safe to eat most things as long as they don't smell spoiled.

Re: Expiration Dates...

I won't eat anything past the expiration date just a mental thing with me. I believe that is the last day the stores are supposedly allowed to sell that item. However in my experience I found a lot of items in the supermarket passed the expiration date which drives me crazy....

i wont eat anything past expiration date...i even hate eating if its a day or two within....its all a mental thing. When i was younger i was at a friends house and saw that her mom was making chicken that was expired and i got sick the next morning so its all in my head that the expired chicken got me sick. Which is weird b/c i eat plenty of meat that is frozen past expiration date Chat Icon

I think it depends on what it is. If its salad dressing, or a can of sauce, i will still use it, but if its dairy then def not.

Meat, no. Well, maybe if its a day or so past the expiration date - but i have to smell it first.

Dairy, i look at the date, but then its gets the sniff and taste test

Some bread lasts well beyond the expiration date, i go by the look and feel of it.

Eggs, no way. not taking a chance on that one!

See DH drives me nuts with this one.. he will use eggs past exp date. I'm going to have to throw them out as soon as they expire, before he can get to them.

To answer the OP, there is very little that I eat after the sxp date.

I do. If it doesn't smell bad or taste funny, I eat it. It's not like the food automatically goes bad on that date.

that is how I feel too... the food doesn't know it was given a date stamped on it's packageChat Icon Chat Icon It is just a round-about guesstimate! So I use my own judgment to see if it looks/smells good! I wouldn't go months and months...but...

I never eat anything past the expiry date. Nothing, nada, zilch.

To me, its there for a reason and I'm not willing to get sick over it!

I agree....as long as they aren't opened, I'll eat it. For something like cream cheese though, if it's opened and has got that yellowed hard part to it, i will not eat it, even if the expiration date is still good.

I used to work forever in a supermarket, and theoretically you are supposed to rotate stuff when you put it on the shelves. Unfortunately, not everyone does. I would go down the pet aisle and find canned dog food that expired back in the 80's.Chat Icon I would NEVER give my dog something that expired. Once I even found a jello from 1976!

You can put the egg in water to test it. If it sinks then it's still good if it floats, dump it.

I sometimes eat food after the expiration date. Depends on what it is and how it looks/smells.

Re: Expiration Dates...

Dairy-NO way! I noticed that milk usually goes bad on the day of the expiration anyway....

Bread, pasta, condiments-absolutely. I don't really understand why they put expiration dates on bagels and bread... It's starch-you put it in the fridge and it lives there for weeks! Pop it in the toaster and it's good to eat!

Re: Expiration Dates...

I'm pretty gross...I'll eat anything as long as its not moldy or rancid.

Sometimes I think manufacturers "expire" things months earlier than they should just to make consumers toss it and buy more.

I'm definitely lax about expiration dates. Dairy just has to pass the sniff test. Eggs are good weeks past the expiration date in my experience.

Re: Expiration Dates...

Like others have said... if it doesn't smell bad and looks fine I usually will have it.

If it's dairy I may have it a few days past if it seems fine and after a few days after that I may get rid of it.

For DS... NO, I will not give him something that expired, but I will have it Chat Icon

Re: Expiration Dates...

It really depends upon what it is for me. I will inspect it for mold and smell it before eating it. Frankly, I have had bread go bad before the expiration date. My general rule of thumb is most things are good within 2days after their expiration date. Hard cheese I give a little longer. Soft cheese I throw away faster. Spices - well I have used some that expired months prior....
