Exocrine Pancreatic Insufficiency

Does anyone know any dogs that suffer from this? My poor, sweet dog was just diagnosed yesterday. Honestly we are happy because it is very treatable, but it is a lifelong disease she will have with no cure. Just wondering if anyone knows any dog owners going through similar situations. Thanks.

Re: Exocrine Pancreatic Insufficiency

My mom's german shepard has this condition. His food needs to be mixed with an enzyme powder to aid digestion. My mom feeds him an organic dry food and cooked ground turkey as this is what he seems to tolerate the best.

When he was first diagnosed he had lost a lot of weight and was quite ill. It took a lot of trial and error to find the appropriate combination of food/enzyme powder. He was diagnosed a few years ago and is doing great. He is a good weight and active and healthy.

It is a life long condition, but once you fine what works for your dog it is very manageable. One drawback it that he cant really have treats or table food because everything he eats has to be mixed with the enzyme and allowed to sit for at least 20 min.

I know that my mom has done a lot of research on this and that she does not get his medication/enzyme powder from the vet, I think she orders it online where it is much less expensive.

I hope this helped that your puppy is feeling better soon

Re: Exocrine Pancreatic Insufficiency

Thank you so much for that information. It was such a scary time for us before she got diagnosed because she kept losing all this weight and we couldn't figure out why, we were so afraid that it would be something that couldn't be fixed. I have been doing research on the internet and also found an online group where I can buy the enzymes for cheaper. The week we started her on the enzymes she began showing almost immediate improvement . We can't wait for her to get back to her old healthy self. I'm glad that your mothers dog is doing so well....Thank you for sharing your story with me, hearing about other dogs doing well gives me hope for my little Roxy
