Europe (NOT a tour)

Is going to Europe possible without a tour?

DH and I would like to travel to multiple cities, see the sites and wander around. With the language barrier, is this possible?

Also, any tips and tricks from BTDT?

Thanks?

Europe (NOT a tour)

Yes. Totally possible and pretty easy to do. We just got back and did France, Austria, Germany and Norway with no tour. We booked all our day trip tours and travel (air, bus and trains) ourselves mostly using the app Viator. We had no issues with language barrier. I don't think we encountered one person the whole trip who couldn't speak at least a bit of english.

This. Pretty much everyone in the major cities speaks English. We like taking the train between cities that are relatively close together (for example, Amsterday-Paris, Paris-Munich) but we have also rented cars and flown between cities. You can totally do it yourselves!

Our summer trip this year was London, Barcelona, south of France, and Italy. We flew to London then to Barcelona where we took a Mediterranean cruise. It was phenomenal.

Definitely doable! I did London & Amsterdam & then Paris, Brussels & Amsterdam. Booked everything myself...flights, trains, hotels & tours. I second Viator for tours, have used them a lot & have never been disappointed. I really loved doing the research & planning!

I did it in college before internet was available. We called and made reservations on pay phones. You can definitely do it : ). We always found enough people that spoke English.

Re: Europe (NOT a tour)

You definitely don't need a tour.

Public transit is very easy to use in general. Both longer haul and city metros. Nothing like the nyc subway.

Language should not be an issue at all unless you are going to Southeastern Europe (which I assume you are not) and even then you'd probably be fine.

If you are able bodied you'll be fine going independently. Have fun planning!

Yes, very doable.

The language shouldn't be a problem in major cities.

Get yourself a rail pass and have fun! How much time do you think you'll have? I think a great first trip in London and Paris, but I'm not sure what exactly you want to see.

Re: Europe (NOT a tour)

Totally doable! I did Lisbon (flight) - London - (train) - Paris and it was super easy. Booked whatever I wanted ahead of time.
