my neighbor does all these types of pyramid scheme type of things and I always get pressured into going. I bought into the essential oils and they don't do anything but smell nice IMO

Thanks! I was at my friends house the other day and I haven’t been over in a few months and I noticed she recently put all these diffusers all over all they were going on and off the entire time I was there. By the time I left I had a migraine. I was just curious she had like 25 oils all over. She was like this one boosts my confidence blah blah blah this one calms me, this one does this and I couldn’t wrap my head around it, to me they are just scents and I know that lavender is supposed to be calming so I guess that one I understand but I never really read into it or explored it so I didn’t want to knock it without knowing but there’s no science behind it, so to me when there’s no scientific evidence I usually can’t get behind something. I guess it’s that whole placebo effect type of thing....Just curious!

This. My coworker sells them and I got roped in. They don't do anything and are expensive.

Re: Essential oils

It's all horseshit.

And as far as lavender being calming, the smell of it makes me so nauseous. And that is TOTALLY not calming to me.

Oh and the best are anytime someone is sick in the house they say- Thieves oil!
Like smelling that shit is going to make you not catch the flu or stomach bug from you kid. Please.
The name is appropriate though because they are all a bunch of thieves- just taking your money.
Ironic.

The only reason I like them is because it's less chemicals than candles. And sometimes I like to burn candles for the smell. So instead I would use these.

I don't use them for every little thing or in diffusers but we use some for a few purposes. I put tea tree oil in my girls' bath water and dd1's skin issues resolved in under two weeks (both eczema and molluscsum).

Dh melts down bulk Shea butter soap and adds tea tree oil and a few others and we all use that and love it.

I add eucalyptus oil to every load of wash to keep away that mildew smell that can happen in front loaders. It works really well.

Dh is the one who researches all this stuff and buys wholesale online so we don't do any of the pyramid schemes. I just go along with whatever he comes up with (within reason lol).

We used tea tree for molluscum as well. It didn't clear it up but, it made it comfortable and it didn't spread.

ETA - But, otherwise, I don't get the hype.

I use tea tree oil here and there for the eczema that extends into my scalp.
It helps a bit, I guess. it's not a miracle cure for me, but it may be that I am not consistent enough with it.

I was talking more about the essential oils that you diffuse and supposed to cure everything from your toenail fungus to your menstrual cramps to your pissy mood all by breathing it in.

And forget the bug sprays. DH is a mosquito MAGNET. He gets bit just by stepping outside. If he is wearing any of that natural crap, he might as well be wearing nothing. The only thing that works for bugs is DEET

I know people that really believe in it and I believe them that it works for them. I have never tried diffusers, but I have used tea tree oil and purchased bug spray and probably other products I can't recall with it.

Tea tree oil works great for skin issues...cuts, burns, etc. I've used it for, with great results. I don't buy the oil though...it's an ointment (Thursday's Plantation brand). Thieves, etc.....I feel like they do nothing at all!! I bought a few to make sugar scrubs from Whole Foods (lemon, peppermint etc.), but that's the extent of my relationship with oils.

Re: Essential oils

I dont use a diffuser, I use the oils sometimes. I like the peppermint oil for headaches, and works for me. I would rather use the oil, than to pop a pill.
I sometimes use the lavendar oil on my son when he has a hard time calming down to go to sleep. It seems to help.
There are certain oils that are not as pure as others, so be careful where you buy them.

I don’t have a diffuser or anything, but I do love lavender oil and sometimes put a dab on the sides of my neck before going to bed. I do find it generally calming. I have a lavender/sandalwood oil that I love. But it’s mostly just because I like the smell, not that it’s some kind of miracle.

Maybe for some people it’s a placebo effect - but hey whatever works!

I was into EOs for a while but more for natural cleaning and air freshening for the most part.

If you are interested in EOs a great place to learn about them is this web site http://www.usingeossafely.com/

What many people don't realize and some MLMs (Multi Level Markets) fail to tell buyers is that not all oils are safe to use "neat" (or undiluted) on the skin. Most oils have to be diluted with a carrier oil (coconut, argan, almond...) before applying to the skin.

Many will also tell you that you can ingest an EO and again that is not always the case. They will tell you it is safe because it is a "therapeutic" grade level oil which is basically BS.

The oils I used were Plant Therapy and Aura Cacia oils. Plant Therapy is great as they have a "Kid Safe" line that comes in rollers that has been pre-diluted to a level that is safe to use on kids. This line was developed by Robert Tisserand who is a leading authority on EOs.

Also, if you or someone you know have a seizure disorder, some oils are dangerous to use around them. http://www.usingeossafely.com/potentially-convulsant-essential-oils/

Also, If you want to diffuse oils, you should only diffuse for 20 -30 mintues at a time and have a few hours break in between diffusing. Too much of an EO is not a good thing!

(and no, I do not sell EOs!!!!)

Re: Essential oils

We use them and love them. We diffuse thieves oil and eucalyptus in a diffuser at night when we start to feel sick with a cold or cough. When my daughter gets her ears infected (from earrings) we do a drop of lavender and tea tree oil diluted with warm water and it clears up in hours. I have rubbed some behind her ears too to ward off an ear infection when she has a cold. We put lemon oil in our tea because it is concentrated and healthy for you. We use a drop of peppermint on our temples to get rid of headaches. There is more that I can't remember. Maybe it's all in my head but I don't think it's a scam and even if it is, it is working so I don't care. They aren't that expensive when you consider how little you need to use so they last long.

ETA: Thieves oil is also awesome and non-toxic to use for cleaning. Tea tree oil diluted can treat lice in a non-toxic way. Some essential oils are shown to have antibiotic qualities - I wouldn't use them alone as an alternative to prescription meds if you need them, but for minor ailments or annoyances I do think they work.

Re: Essential oils

we have a diffuser. My youngest had nonstop colds last winter and I was willing to try anything. We even got the kid safe roller to put on him.

It did nothing. We ended up having his adenoids removed in June. He's had 1 cold since and it went away after 3 days.

But we still use it now and then for the nice smell. Chat Icon
