Its not even naivite. People do a lot of research and read up on it and make these CHOICES. Do you know HOW MANY KIDS don't get their vaccinations? And not just uneducated people. It's very sad to me.
As for adults, there a lot of people out there who chose not to use western medicine- and lots of time they end up better in the long run. I had a friend who had a bunch of stomach problems and saw every GI specialist. No one could help her. She started getting accupuncture years ago- and has never had a problem since. Now ever time she has something she would go to the doctor for, she goes to the accupuncturist instead. She is much happier.
To me, the biggest problem is there are so many holes in our medical research. And the lady on the show was right- the Pharmacutical companies have SUCH financial incentives to sell us on their medication- Hell they even advertise on TV now. However, I would NEVER put my children in jeopardy. I may worry- but I will still do everything I can to make sure they are OK.

Re: ER
ER, while a fictional storyline, brings up an issue that is still debated by professionals. Yes HIV & AIDS are completely different stories than just simple vaccines. I didnt like how they choose to portray the mom as some irresponsible holistic nutcase. Many people forgo Western medicine with terrific results.
My twin decided not to vaccinate her children. I realized after researching cribs, car seats, etc - that I shouldn't take my doctor's word on vaccines without researching something that could cause paralysis or the death of my child.
I was infuriated to find out that lobbyist developed the idea of a no-fault alternative to the tort system for resolving vaccine injury claims. They passed and established the National Vaccine Injury Compensation Program (VICP) which is under the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. So in a nut shell, you can't sue the pharmceutical companies. The Federal gov't funds the compensation by a tax that is on every dose of a purchased vaccine
Vaccine-related deaths are limited to $250,000 plus attorney's fees & costs. The average compensation for a vaccine-related injury is $824K.
After looking into I decided to vaccinate both my kids - but I have to say I waited until they were older. I decided no shots until after the 6 month mark and will only let them get a vaccination if they are in perfect health (not even a cold). The bottom line is that I'm expecting that my kids are going to travel as I did and I want them protected for disease as I was.
It's easy to judge a TV character but when you have your own children and it's vaccine time, nothing will calm your fears as your baby's body tries to fight off a foreign substance you've just injected into its body. Nothing will make you forget the 9 in 100,000 odds of your child having a febrile seizure after the DTP vaccine or the 34 in 100,000 odds after the MMR. You just hope & pray that you've done the right thing - whether you decide to vaccinate or not.
