Re: epidoral questions

I think there are different kinds of epidural... the one I got, I could adjust how much I need (I had a button that I could press every 15 min if I was still in pain)... I was 4cm when I got it (I dont think they give you epidural earlier)... oh and I heard that some people dont feel when they have contractions and dont know when to push, I felt contractions and pushed when I needed to...

Re: epidoral questions

I had the constant drip one that I could push the button for an extra "shot" of the epi. I was induced so I could get the epi whenever I wanted...I got it when I was only a fingertip dialated after 4 hours of contractions Chat Icon

Re: epidoral questions

I think it all depends on your dr. and hospital- how they work it. I would go over it with your dr. during your review of a birth plan. For me, I got it after a few intense contractions (was given pitocin to speed things up). I got the epi drip within 20 minutes of asking for it. It was turned off as I was getting stitched up from the episiotomyChat Icon Asked the dr. why I felt her sewing me up... she asked the nurse the same question. The nurse said she shut my drip off. the dr. yelled at her to put it back on until she was finished. After the epi life was great! Felt no pain. did feel my daughter coming out though and the pressure needed to push.
ETA: I got the epi when I was 5cm.

Re: epidoral questions

i got an epidural with DD and i would just like to say... don't count on it. within minutes of getting the epidural DD's heart rate went down to less than half of what it should have been and the epidural was turned off. supposedly this is common where the baby does not respond well to the anesthesia. in any case i did not get the drugs i had been counting on and felt everything.

now that i am getting closer to delivering DS, i am wondering if the epidural will work for me this time around.

see this freaks me out- isn't that the painful part?
I know contractions are the worst, but wouldn't the actual giant object coming out of the small hole part REALLY hurt?

Chat Icon actually no, it didn't hurt at all since I had the epi. it just felt like a ...well... a baby coming out. The head popped out and then the rest of her body slid right out (if you want the detailsChat Icon )

I actually had no fear once I wasa in labor. leading up to labor I had a ton of fears. But once you are in labor (for me and a lot of other women will tell you) the entire experience is surreal and seems to fade a way shortly afterwards. Not that you forget anything, but that it really wasn't all that bad. you'll be fine.Chat Icon

Re: epidoral questions

my advice to you- GET THE EPIDURALChat Icon -best thing in the world!
I don't think i could've done it w/o it.

I got it about an hour after getting to the hospital-and i was already dilated about 5cm. It worked so well that i didn't even know i was having contractions!!
I was numb until about 2 hours after they removed everything.

Re: epidoral questions

When I was in labor with DD, I got to the hospital and was checked and I was already 7 cm. I told them I wanted the epi right away! I was first told that I needed to get a full IV bag into me first Chat Icon That felt like forever, and it was probably only about 20-30 minutes. The epi was on the entire time, I could feel the contractions, but it was a pressure feeling, not a painful feeling. I pushed the entire time with it on. My doc said I was pushing right so there was no reason to turn it off (which they will if you can't feel to push right).

Re: epidoral questions

I think mine was a constant drip. I got it at almost 7 cm. I still felt when I was having contractions and was able to push without a problem. My epidural also did not slow down my contractions at all which was helpful.
