Energy Audit - Has anyone done this?
Hi. My house is freezing cold and I really can't take it anymore. I've heard about people having energy audits done. Has anyone done this? Was it helpful? If you wouldn't mind, can you tell me who you used and how much it cost you?
At this point we've already put the shrink wrap over the windows but the baby's room is still really cold, we are using a space heater. Our energy bills are really high though.
Next time we buy a house, it will be in the winter so that I know how cold it gets! (just frustrated)
TIA!

Re: Energy Audit - Has anyone done this?
My mom had it done recently. After the audit, they give her an itemized list of what was "wrong", and she could use it to decide what to fix, and who would fix it. Went from simple (insulation pads behind outlet plates on exterior walls, or new weatherstripping around doors) up to adding several more inches of insulation in the attic.
Depending on what they find, you could see a return on your investment very quickly.

Re: Energy Audit - Has anyone done this?
My mom's townhouse is entirely electric, and LIPA is doing a free energy audit this week.
We got energy saving curtains and a thick area rug for the baby's room, and that's made a huge difference (his room was freezing too). the energy saving curtains are a little pricey but great.

Re: Energy Audit - Has anyone done this?
I know from your recent post that we are in the exact same boat and I'm going to call Slomins to do it. I have a contract with them but from the website it looks like its free anyway.
Just curious because my parents keep asking me this... do you have hardwood floors or wall to wall carpeting? We ripped out the carpeting and they think it will make things warmer if we put something back down (I know in my case there is space between the molding and the floor that seems drafty). I also found out last week due to a leak that we have NO insulation in the walls so I'm looking into getting it blown in.

We have all hardwood floors. We moved in July so we haven't done much (baby born in October). We are looking into getting an area rug for part of the nursery (it's 2 rooms, a room plus an "office") as part of it is over the garage and probably partly why its so cold. I doubt we still have insulation if there ever was any. We too are seriously considering have insulation blown in. Money is unexpectedly tight now (who knew having a baby is so expensive, even with insurance!) so we'll probably have to wait until summer to do the insulation. If you get any info on a good company, can you let me know. Thanks!

I'll keep you posted and hope you'll do the same DH is fighting me on the rugs and I much prefer hardwood floors myself but I'll try anything at this point. Not that it will help in the bathroom but I have to jack the heat way up before I give DS a bath bc it's so darn drafty in there! We just moved in Sept and I keep telling DH that I'm ready to move back to my apt where I used to not have to worry about all this stuff!
