Encouraging verbal communication

DS is almost 17 months....he has a handful of words that he can say, probably around 8 words. He hardly ever uses them though and will point and grunt when he wants things. How can I encourage him to use his words and try to speak? He is getting very frustrated and acting out and I know it's because he can't communicate the way he wants to.

Keep doing what you're doing. Talking, reading, showing picture books and saying what it is. He will get there. DS will be 23 months soon and just putting 2 and 3 words together.
He also has an older brother who talks... A LOT. LOL

Encouraging verbal communication

When he points and grunts, ask him a question using simple words. For example, if he points to his sippy cup, ask him Do you want milk. I always emphasize the words he knows (like milk) and then he will point and say milk. I try to keep my sentances simple and always give lots of praise when he points and uses the right word. Just keep at it, you will be amazed at how quickly they pick up on it.
