emergency kits... recent weather
i know that the question of "are you ready?" or "what do you have for an emergency?" have already been asked.
i thought i would do a follow-up, of sorts...
with all the recent weather and earthquake news, what have you purchased, planned, or changed?
for our household, i've started the following:
* sockpiled the following: * water * adult diapers for SO's mom * paper products * wood for cooking * batteries
* things i'm putting together: * getting MREs planned
* things we already had: * all sorts of camping stuff - tents, sleeping bags, alternative ways to cook, generator
* things that are still on my to-do list: * create a paper copy of important information: Rx, phone numbers, addresses * first aid kit (the one i had was obliterated on our last camping trip)

We have Water First aid kits Sleeping bags Tents with rain tarps Lantern Wrist flashlights and flashlights Batteries Back up chargers for cell phones Walkietalkies Copies of important documents Three months of daily medicine
We eat our snacks, and drink our water but they are replenished weekly.
I would make sure to take out cash and fill the car with gas.
To be honest, I would drive and find a hotel somewhere else, that is what we did during Sandy.
I only like manual can openers and we have duct tape
Also work gloves. I have a pair for each of us.

Re: emergency kits... recent weather
I've purchased/assembled a kit that should sustain my family of 4 for a couple of days. I bought a couple LifeStraws so we have several thousand gallons of drinkable water. If we have to shelter in place, I have enough gear from my normal camping gear, and things that I normally have around, to last us for several weeks.
I'm making a list of phone numbers and keeping them in a waterproof bag. If our phones die, I have no way to call someone on someone else's phone or a landline, since I don't remember anyone's phone number anymore....
