Email Identity scam

DH just sent this to me from his company, thought you all should know just in case.

E-mail Identity Theft Scams

As you may know, "phishing" is a growing Internet scam technique which employs an on-line method of identity theft. An attacker who wants to "phish" potential victims uses a "spoofed" e-mail address and/or website to capture personal identifiable information or credentials, which the attacker can then use for fraudulent purposes. Typically, the attack begins with an e-mail that requests a response or directs you to a website. Phishing e-mails have become remarkably sophisticated, sending recipients to fake websites that may be impossible to distinguish from the real websites. Since phishing is a growing scam technique, you should always be careful when you receive e-mails requesting your personal information.

Here are some tips you can follow to avoid becoming an ID theft victim:

* Be very suspicious of any e-mail that requests personal information -- such as your user ID, password, PIN, e-mail address, social security number -- even if it appears to be coming from a legitimate source. When in doubt, call the company instead.

* If you are suspicious about an e-mail, don't click on any links or respond to the e-mail.

* Be suspicious of e-mails that don't greet you by name but are addressed generically, such as "Dear Customer".

* Ask yourself, why is this company writing to me about this? If in doubt call the company.

* Don't click on any suspicious attachments.

* Check the URL. Is it from the trusted company and does it look right (www.companyname.com versus www.companynam3.com)?

* Be very careful of any e-mail blocked by ADP's Spam filter that requires that you release the e-mail or attachment.
