Elecare - anyones DC suddenly start drinking less?

We started Elecare yesterday afternoon. Normally he takes 3 1/2 to 4 oz. at each feeding. Since starting the elecare though, he's only drinking 2oz per feeding. I cannot for the life of me get him to drink any more than that. He's also super gassy -- he'll burp 4 times for just the 2oz. I dont know if thats part of the reason he wont drink more Chat Icon

Did this happen to anyone else??

Tara, is she cranky or fussy from the constipation, or just straining and not going? How long after you started the elecare did she become constipated? DS started yesterday and I think he might be getting constipated.

Mix an ounce of prune juice with an ounce of water...our baby had the same issue and eventually it got better...it was a nightmare though and the best you can do too is if DC is old enough give just a little bit of gerber prunes..but prune juice will work, our GI doc suggested it

Also, some kids hate the taste..ask your Doc about what you can do..why do i think they said to mix something in with it until DC got used to it..i cant remember bc my DD didnt mind it

Hi,

It took my daughter a few days to adjust to it and then she started drinking more. I wouldn't put anything in it.....just give it some time.

My daughter didn't become constipated from it but the frequency of her BM's decreased. It actually was pretty great...she would go one time per day at 7 am.

FYI--I saw improvement in 3 days and a dramatic improvement in 1 1/2 weeks.

Good luck!

Our gastro told us 100% of babies will get constipated while taking Elecare. (Before starting solids) We dealt with this by giving 1/4 tsp. Maalox, as needed, under the advisement of the gastro. The magensium makes them go within 30 minutes.

Okay, two questions -- how did you give her the maalox (mix in the formula or via syringe?) and can you give maalox to a 6 week old?

I believe the dosage was 1/4 tsp. twice a day when needed, which was almost everyday. Our LO was about 8 weeks when we started the Elecare/Zantac/Maalox. I was so hesitant to meidcate and stop BF but it was what my LO needed....and he is perfectly healthy now at 15 months. NO Meds! We also take him to a pediatriac chiropractor which coincided with the med/Elecare wean. He is awesome and I think if we had his support earlier we would have been able to wean much earlier.

Check with your Dr. about the Maalox.

My doc told us the same thing. I actually have to give the Maalox (regular strength, not any of the maximum strengths or anything) 4 times a day. I give her 2ml in 4 bottles a day. If I forget to give it, I can definately see her get constipated. I was also told to give her a glycerin suppository every day to help with the constipation and to help relieve gas.

ETA: Sorry, I just realized I never answered your original question. No, my DD did not start eating less when we put her on Elecare.
