Eating peanuts?
Should I not be eating peanuts during the 1st trimester?
I don't eat them that often (I'm a teacher and have a student in my class who is HIGHLY allergic), but I do tend to pick them up rather than pretzels or crackers, which don't stick with me as long.
Thoughts?

I don't think there's anything wrong with peanuts...
people are allergic to many things.... I suspect avoiding allergens like peanuts, strawberries, gluten, dairy would just increase the likelyhood that a child might develop an allergy to them....

Re: Eating peanuts?
I read somewhere you can eat peanuts and peanut products but not to over do it because there are studies out there showing links between peanut allergies and the expectant mother's peanut intake. I think of it like eating fish, I still eat tuna and salmon just only once or twice a week.

Me too for both pregnancies. DD does not have a peanut allergy and DS is TBD.

All I ate was peanut butter when I was pregnant with DS and he has the worst peanut allergy. I thought being exposed to it in utero would have made a difference. He is allergic to dogs too and I had one my whole pregnancy. I want to talk to his allergist about the likely hood of having another db with food allergies. They are horrible.

Me too. I at pb & jelly everyday when I was pg with DD. At 2 she was diagnosed with a peanut allergy. It is life threatening.
Both her allergist and my OB say NOT to eat peanut products during pregnancy.

Really? I will have to ask DS allergist and my OB this too. I would hate to have another kid with food allergies.

Re: Eating peanuts?
Here's what my daughter's allergist told me (when I told him I was pg again).
IF you (you or DH) have a history of food allergies in your family, PARTICULARLY nut allergies, then you should try to avoid or at least limit your peanut intake in pregnancy. If you DON'T have any history of food alergies, then peanuts are perfectly fine.

I was just going to say this-our nephew(on my DH's side-his sisters son) has life threatening food allergies so I am avoiding peanuts. His allergies are to nuts, sesame, dairy, beef etc. Yeah the poor kid couldn't eat anything-he has grown outy of a lot of them but will probably always have the nut one

Re: Eating peanuts?
The Academy of Pediatrics recommends not eating peanuts or peanut butter while pregnant and breastfeeding. But they do feel that an allergy is more likely to form while nursing then while pregnant.
For all those who said I ate it and my child is fine, I have a friend who lived off of peanut butter while she was pregnant and nursing. She has no history at all of peanut or nut allergy on either side of the family and yet her daughter has a life threatening peanut allergy.
The thing with these studies is they calculate the risk, it's up to you what you want to do but according to the studies done you at putting the baby at risk for an allergy if you eat peanut butter and peanuts. Yes it's a small risk, especially if allergies don't run in the family, but the risk is there. It's up to you what you do.

Re: Eating peanuts?
See, now I'm concerned.
Neither DH or I have food-related allergies (and no one in our families do, either), but I do have VERY bad seasonal allergies and environmental allergies (dust, mold, etc.). Do we think this could transfer into food allergies as well?
Now I'm really concerned.

Re: Eating peanuts?
This worries me. I won't eat the peanuts, just not worth it. I can go 9 mths without PB or peanuts.
