East Rockaway
Can anyone tell me about it?
DH came across some homes he really liked and wants to take a ride this weekend to see the area.
I just never heard of it. I thought it was in 'The Rockaway's' but clearly I'm wrong
How is the school district? Are taxes out of control?
Any information is useful. We are looking to sell and get out of our co-op within the next year and a half. So we need to start looking into areas we would be interested in living.

Re: East Rockaway
My good friend lives there now, with her husband who grew up there. She says it's a really nice area, but all the people know each other. She says that when they go to a restaurant in the area her husband is stopped by several other people who know him from growing up there. I don't think that is necessarily a bad thing, it could be really nice, but she finds it a little strange.

Didn't East Rockaway get hit hard by Hurricane Sandy?

I don't know much about the town itself but my friend got hit hard and they are still waiting to hear about what to do on her house. She is still living with her sister.

East Rockaway
I used to work in Oceanside which is right near there. Everyone knows each other and most people there grew up there, buy houses there, etc.

This is what I reading now online. I told DH I was pretty sure it was hit by the storm.
Looking online at houses and I see some advertised as 'not in flood zone', so that gives me a better idea of the area.
Thanks everyone

Re: East Rockaway
I grew up in East Rockaway. And I haven't lived there in 20+ years, but I still have family that does. My brother lives now in the family home and he's not going anywhere.
Yes, the town did get hit hard by Sandy. Everything south of Main Street flooded. And the HS, which is well north of Main Street, also flooded, but that's because it sits next to a tidal creek that runs through the area. My childhood home is within walking distance to the ER train station and the HS and it was not affected by flooding at all. My brother didn't even lose electricity during Sandy.
I really, in all honesty, can't say much about the schools because I went to private school my whole life. There are 2 elementary schools (K-6) and one HS (7-12). It's a VERY small town and yes, people know everyone. Some of the very same families still live there from when I was growing up.
It is a great little town. I do miss it. If you have any specific questions, let me know in a FM and I can get into more details if you want!
Good Luck!

I grew up in East Rockaway but in the Lynbrook School district area. My parents still live there now. Centre Ave Elementary is a great school (award winning) but I've always heard that the middle school/ high school isn't the greatest. Part of the problem is that it is very small. Many people send their children to private school.
Parts of East Rockaway were very badly hit by Hurricane Sandy. My parents missed the flood waters by two homes. Unfortunately, the sewage treatment plant in Bay Park was also compromised sending raw sewage into some homes. Couple that with the surge of water, it was a giant disaster. Again, not all of East Rockaway was damaged. Stay away from the creeks and the flood zone and you should be ok. Also you may want to see if you can find a home in East Rockaway zoned for Lynbrook schools, it has a "better reputation".

East Rockaway
Thank you all for your responses. I will let DH know about all the feedback on here. It sounds like a great area, we'll just have to be cautious about looking at homestoo close to the water.

East Rockaway
We are 2 blocks from the line of east rockaway. We are a Lynbrook zip with east rock schools. Not an ounce of flooding by me. Nothing. No damage from sandy. We were lucky. Yes south of Main Street flooded very bad. But up north was fine. I am one block south of sunrise. FM if you would like more info and if you are interested in Lynbrook with east rock sd.

Re: East Rockaway
There are a few parts to East Rockaway: Bay Park (south of Main Street - majority of where Sandy damage happened school district is ERock, East Rockaway that is zoned for Lynbrook schools - near Marion street, St. Raymond's and west of the East Rockaway library- these houses will be at least twice the cost of most Bay Park houses because lynbrook has a better reputation for the school district and there is also East Rockaway town that is zoned for East Rockaway schools. We were thisclose to buying a home in Bay Park (small town feel, beach vibe and majority are blue collar workers, close to where we are from (Lynbrook/RVC) and Sandy hit. It was a blessing in disguise- the house was right near the canal and is completely destroyed. The community is wonderful and we knew we'd have flooding when it rained due to knowing the area forever but Sandy completely demolished homes in this area. Like an above poster mentioned there were also sewage problems and we know people who had raw sewage in their homes. With this knowledge I would definitely make sure you do your research before buying a house in ER. I know that after seeing, smelling and living so close that I would never be able to deal with the issues they have down here and I give the people that do a lot of credit. You can drive around and still see the dumpsters and PODS from those people who still are not back in their homes yet. Also there are many homes zoned with lynbrook schools for more affordable prices but many had water damage so I would be careful and make sure to hire someone with experience in water damage/mold inspections if you get to that point. Good luck!
