Early intervention: what is the first step
That I would need to do to get LO evaluated for speech? LO is very bright and can follow directions very well but doesn't speak the way a 2 1/2 year old should...once in awhile LO will say multiple word sentences but not always. It is like selective talking! It drives me nuts! Lol!
What do I have to do first? Do any of you have contact info for Suffolk co.? Thanks! I held off w this long enough but I think it is time to have an evaluation.

We got the contact info through our pediatrician. He gave us a "prescription" noting DS' speech delay that we eventually had to provide to EI. Not sure if it always works this way, but this is how we started.

I don't have an answer for you, but I do know my cousins LO wasn't diagnosed (with selective mutism) until I believe she was in school

For EI you can just call the county EI office and request an evaluation. But they age out of EI at 3yo. So at 2.5 they may tell you that you need to go through the school district.

When does your LO turn 3? I just learned the hard way that once they are close to 3, EI wont take them and many school districts don't provide services in the summer.

thanks ladies! she's not 2.5 yet-almost so Im going to call this week!!
She's def. not a selective mute--she's just not talking as much as she should be at this age.
Do any of you have the # to call for Suffolk?
also, if I have to go the school district route, who do I contact there? What department?

I should have done this sooner but I really thought she'd be better by now! Hopefully it's not too late!

I would call EI now and get the ball rolling ASAP!!!! Just tell them you want to have an evaluation done for speech.

We went through our school district. I called the district main office and they directed me to the special education office. DD was 3.5 though. But maybe start there.

We had DS first tested when he was just 4 years old for speech and other things. We went through our school district.
