DS has STOPPED babbling/cooing. He's 14 weeks. Close to freaking out.

Hi!

My DS is 15 weeks tomorrow and he stopped babbling/cooing last saturday. He was babbling and cooing quite a bit, and making new sounds every 2 days or so. He was also engaging in back and forth "conversation." Saturday this all stopped.

He still smiles and makes eye contact and squeals or lets out little screams but no real cooing or babbling. (once in a while a short coo).

What is going on? I sort of posted about this a few days ago bc he had the Prevar vaccine saturday but at this point, I'm not sure what's going on. Aside from the vaccine speculation, I want to know if this is something that normally happens. Do they regress like this? What could be going on? I've asked a few people who have said its normal but i'm not sure if they are saying that to just make me feel better.

I called my ped today and mentioned it and her tone changed when she asked "how long?" It scared me. When I said since saturday she said "oh,ok, not to worry about it now" and told me to check back in with her in a week about it.

Thoughts?Comments?
TIA from a freaked out mommy

I wouldnt worry, babies tend to put a skill that they already have on the back burner while they are learning a new one.

ITA! My DC would stop "talking" everytime they were about to reach a new milestone. They start concentrated on the new skill and can't do both at the same time! Maybe he's about to roll or something cool!!

Did he start a new skill? Like sitting or rolling etc? DD did this for a while when she started crawling, pulling to standing. The ped said it frequently happens that children will for a short time lose a skill when they start a new one (he said he has seen children stop walking or stop talking).

This happens to DD every once in awhile, and I used to freak out every time. I did some internet research on it, and it made me not worry as much. Honestly I think it just happens when, like both pp said, when theyve "mastered" a sound they give up on it for awhile, or when they are focusing on reaching other milestones.
All I know is whenever I worry that DD is talking less for a few days than she used to, she usually suprises me with a new sound and I forget I ever worried.

My DS is 4 months and some days he is babbling, cooing and "talking" more than others. At this age I wouldnt worry about it. Sometimes when they reach a new milestone they regress in another area slightly.

ETA: And just my opinion from all the research I have done, I would NOT worry about the prevnar vaccine causing any type of developmental delay.

Re: DS has STOPPED babbling/cooing. He's 14 weeks. Close to freaking out.

I have to say I try so hard not to worry about any of these things so I don't keep track of weeks ect, but..ds has been talking like crazy lately and was a few weeks ago too but I do recall sometime "inbetween" the two spurts of talking he had a few days of very quiet behavior. He is 16 weeks. I know it is so hard not to worry because I am a total worry wart myself and but I promise you when he started talking a lot this past few days I did realize there was a breif period of not as much. It was prob right around 14 weeks. Also, little things like this always happen at the worst times (you just had the vaccine) and usually have nothing to do with one another. Keep us posted and I'm sure everything is okayChat Icon
