driving to florida ?

We have a wedding in fort lauderdale in February. Flights are expensive and we are going on an already booked vacation in December so we wanted to drive to save money

few questions:

Are we crazy?

Will we really save any money?

Did you ever drive to FL from NY? Give me feed back to helo me make a decision.

I personally think you are crazy, but I have a low tolerance for long road trips. We drove to MI twice, took about 15 hours, and was torture!! I could never drive to FL!

Re: driving to florida ?

I drove from Naples, FL to NY (Long Island) once. It wasn't that bad. It was my cousin, myself and my dog.

First day was Naples, FL-->SC (some random town near South of the Border). Next day was SC-->MD (Rockville) - stayed with family.
MD-NY on the 3rd day.
Each day was 9 hrs of driving and the 3rd was 4. I could have done it in 2 days but we wanted to see certain family in MD.

There are tolls from NY-DC. Add those up and figure out gas.
I'm sure it will be much cheaper than flying in Feb.

Re: driving to florida ?

Did you price it out? Gas toll, 1 night in hotel, food, extra days needed there & back for driving.

9 hrs is our max.

Re: driving to florida ?

Have you looked into flying into a different airport like Tampa or St. Pete then driving to Ft. Lauderdale ?

Re: driving to florida ?

I don't think you will save much with gas prices, hotel and tolls. Plus the value of your time!

driving to florida ?

We've made the drive from LI to Ft. Myers several times. It definitely saves us $...we have four kids.

There are a couple of "I95" websites that we used to plan our first few trips.

We try to leave NY after dinner/after rush hour and get several hours under our belt before we stop for the night. DH and I switch off driving.

We are a big road trip family...ymmv! We just make sure to pace ourselves, no need to get there in one shot! We've found lots of fun things between here and there that we would have never discovered if we flew over them.

Good luck!

I would rather have a horse kick me in the face than drive to florida. it's sooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo long and sooooooooooooooo tiring that by the time you get there, you need a day or two to rest up.

plus, it adds more time to your trip. like if you only want to take a certain amount of vacation time from work.

In January, DH, DD (2) and I drove to Florida. Only DH drove.
Day One: We drove from 5AM to 5PM and stopped in Santee SC, had dinner and went to sleep.
Day Two: We drove from 8AM to 5PM and got to Naples, FL.

We had to stop a lot b/c DD was newly potty trained. We had a great trip, arrived feeling well rested and we did save a lot of money in the end. I really don't mind it and I don't think it is a big deal. Before DD, DH and I used to drive to Key West in two days.

Tampa st pete is then a 3 hr drive.

I would try west palm but you would still need to rent a car and then that adds to the cost of the trip.

Re: driving to florida ?

We always drive to Florida because it is so expensive for us to fly (3 kids, renting a minivan, parking)...we do it in 2 days - first day we go from LI to Savannah, GA...second day we go from Savannah to West Palm...

Re: driving to florida ?

We do this every other year. I know we aren't the norm but we make the trip without stopping to stay in a hotel AND my husband does all the driving! We don't really mind it at all. Lots of coffee/espresso, and red bull. We leave on a Friday around 8-9pm so a bulk of the driving gets done overnight. We have 3 kids and they all fall asleep shortly after getting in the car since it is their normal bedtime. They all sleep through the night no problem. When they wake up in the morning we stop for breakfast. Then back in the car for the rest of the trip only stopping for bathroom/gas.
We have done the trip at least 5-6 times. It's always faster getting down there. Usually in Orlando in 14-15 hours.
When we arrive we unpack, have dinner, go for a swim, then bed and are up and feeling great the next day.
DH is in his early 30's and said it was easier in his 20's but it is still definitely manageable. We save a lot between airfare for 5 people plus renting a car for the time we will be there so for us it is worth it.

When DH and I would drive to Key West we almost got to Disney in the first day, very do-able! The only reason we didn't try it this time is because we had to go to Naples first to visit family and we didn't want to show up at some strange hour LOL DH drives the whole way and he said the same thing about the difference between the 20s and the 30s, thats funny LOL I did have to give him a backrub every night!
