Driving
Is it completely unrealistic to think that I could drive myself to the hospital while in labor and also drive myself home from the hospital after delivering?

Re: Driving
I think you could make it to the hospital if you really had to-although thinking about when I was in labor, I wouldn't have wanted to. I remember concentrating on not leaping off the seat with each contraction, I don't think I could have concentrated on the road properly.
Going home, I don't think you should drive yourself home, you'd be amazed at the muscles you use, it was still a little painful driving at 1 week postpartum (vaginal delivery).

It depends on when you are going to the hospital. How far apart are your contractions? Are you on your way to be induced? Are you having a scheduled c-section? How intense are the contractions? If the contractions are unbearable than you probably shouldn't drive yourself to the hospital. If you can tolerate the pain then I would say it would be ok.
As for coming home, I don't think you should drive yourself home. You might still be sore and uncomfortable.

Re: Driving
I don't think I would have been able to drive myself. The pain was too much. Completely unrealistic? Maybe not, but I probably would do it unless it was an emergency. Can you call a cab?
As far as driving home, just be aware that if you have a c-section you can't drive. I would think either way it would be really hard though.

My water broke before labor started so I wasn't really in any pain. So I probably could have driven myself, but I don't think I would recommend it. When contractions started I couldn't even keep my eyes open nevermind drive!

Totally depends on how early in labor you head to hospital and quickly labor comes on. I definitely could not/should not have driven myself to the hospital. Going home I would have been fine to drive. I felt largely back to normal within a few hours of delivering.

I honestly don't think you are even allowed to drive yourself home from the hospital after you give birth....

If you have a c section you are not allowed to drive so you won't be able to.
As far as there. My water broke at 1230am and no way in hell was I in a frame of mind to drive.

Re: Driving
I think you should make sure to have a "Plan B".
With my DD my water broke at 2am and my contractions started fast and when they hit..........there was NO way I could've driven myself. Between contracting, being tired, and being nervous I would've been a hazard on the road.
With both my DD and DS I ended up with a C-section and not only are you NOT allowed to drive, you're in soooo much pain that you wouldn't be able to drive even if you could. Every tiny bump while driving is agony on your incision.

Re: Driving
I did. My water started to break while getting a scan done at 37w1d. The doc said I could drive myslef to the hospital because it was my first and nothing would happen. WRONG!! I was freakin out because 5mins into the drive I started getting bad contractions every 2 mins. It was the longest 15min drive.
Not sure about the drive home.

Driving
I was going to be induced so I had no contractions. I could've driven myself to the hospital because I felt complete normal.
Going home though, I wanted to be in the back with the baby. Plus I had a C-section and although I felt good, I don't think it would've been wise.

I couldn't have done either.
Me either. I would have never been able to concentrate on driving to get to the hospital. As for coming home, I wouldn't. I had a vaginal birth and was barely able to walk, no less drive.

No to both.
Why would you need to drive yourself?

Re: Driving
You don't know what kind of labor you'll have so I wouldn't count on driving yourself there.
As for going home, what is your hospital's policy? Mine won't allow it. The nurse wheels you to your car where they ensure you're not driving and that the baby is properly secured.

Re: Driving
Not sure what your situation is but if you need a backup plan maybe consider a taxi service in the area.
like others have said...you won't know your situation until the time comes. there are many possibilities.
my personal experience...the first time around
there: I could have driven, I was being induced, didn't feel any contraction pain and my water didn't break...so driving would have been fine.
back: my recovery was quick and I felt fine. I didn't drive home, but I probably could have. I felt okay leaving and not really in any pain.

Re: Driving
Yes it is unrealistic to drive to the hospital. No, I think its reasonable to going home if its a natural birth.

No way on the way there - I could barely sit still! And I had a c section so I wasn't allowed to drive home.

Driving
I could have driven myself bc I wasn't in labor and had to go in bc of low fluid... going home I couldn't have because I had a csection and I took pain killers before leaving the hospital. Not sure about after a natural.
