Drinking and IVF

I know during our orientation for IVF they said we shouldn't drink alcohol. I do not drink at all, and DH has an occasional drink. When exactly should he stop all together for our IVF cycle?

Re: Drinking and IVF

I would say whenever you feel comfortable. I drank wine during my 2ww..and my cycle...To each their own ya know?

I dont think your DH needs to stop at all though.

Even if he has MF issues? Both the doctor and nurse mentioned it to us...Hmm...

They didn't put any drinking restrictions on my husband. Just me. We also have MF issues as well.

Re: Drinking and IVF

I think they might think the alcohol interferes with the drugs. Like coming home late from drinking and trying to give yourself a shot...not fun. And not to mention that drinking thins your blood.

Is this also something they recommend while during the BCP period too or is it when you are actually starting the meds?

Re: Drinking and IVF

I've always drunk during IVF cycles and so has DH. Granted we don't have MF issues, but I've never been told otherwise.
I've even had an occasional drink during the 2WW.Chat Icon Chat Icon

I am not changing my drinking habits until I get that BFP! Life's too short not to enjoy it to the fullest!

This is what I am starting to feel. Every 2ww a function comes up and I am tired of watching everything I do. I barely even go to the gym during the 2ww.

We went out for our friend's birthday Saturday night and I had a drink....we went to a BBQ and I had a wine spritzer. I'm in my 2ww....My motto is everything in moderation....dont really think there should be a problem if you're not out getting bombed every night.

Re: Drinking and IVF

I am a big drinker and I did not drink during my cycle. The day I started stims I did not drink. I have read studies online that say that IVF can be 50% less successful if you are drinking. Drinking also causes sperm dna damage so my DH totally cut down before retrieval. he drank a little but very little. We were self pay so I wanted to give us teh best chances possible. You can do a search on Google scholar and read studies-there are lots out there on IVF success

I drank up until we started the stims. I really wanted to drink during the 2ww - just a glass of wine for my nerves, but I couldn't bring myself to do it.

DH only drank a very rare beer or glass of wine up until retrieval day.

Re: Drinking and IVF

I drank wine during stims and in fact right up to the day before transfer. I think the key is everything in moderation, also if a glass of wine helps to relax you why not?

Re: Drinking and IVF

Thanks for the info, ladies. I do not drink at all, so it's not an issue for me. My husband drinks (occasionally) and I was wondering about him. He'll probably lay off during our cycle "just in case". Thanks!

Same here. Sperm is produced 6-8 weeks in advance so the damage is already done by the time you are doing IVF. I don't think DH drank a lot during my IVF cycle, but he certainly didn't restrict himself either. I did not drink during my 2ww.
