Dr Browns and nipples ??

- What is the difference between natural flow and natural flow wide neck?

- How do I know which level (1, 2, etc..) niples to choose?

I BF but will start pumping and bottle feed.

Right now I have been using the 2 oz botlles they gave me at the hospital.

Re: Dr Browns and nipples ??

Supposedly the wide neck is more like the breast so easier for babies who nurse and bottle feed alternately. I do not know how much validity is to this, but I would imagine its a similar argument for people who use Avent bottles and like those. We formula feed exclusively and used the wide necks in the 8oz size, I found them easier to hold for some reason.

I would start with the level one nipples, once baby gets older and wants to eat faster, you may want to switch to level 2.

I read the wide neck is easier to hold ( when DC is older) and you

they say level 1 nipples ares good up to 3mths. I dont plan to switch for a while because she drinks to fast as it is -sometimes choking

Re: Dr Browns and nipples ??

to be honest, Im not sure what the differnce with the wide necked ones are - - - we have always used the regular ones....no problems, we've only used dr Browns from day 1 - DD is a yr now.

We used level 1 nipple till about 4-5 mths old and then switched - - it was taking TOO LONG for her to finish the bottle and she was getting annoyed. She is still using level 2 at a year old - we never had a need to switch to the level 3. Ill use the Y cut ones once in a blue moon if I add a bit of cereal to her bottle. (if she is sick or teething and didnt eat well that day)

HTH!

My son hated the wide neck until he got older. He refused to drink out of it. I tried to keep him on the level I nipple as long as possible so he would still want to BF. I was so afraid of nipple confusion or he would refuse the breast.
I actually had trouble with him taking any bottles when I first went back to work. Those were very stressful days!

Re: Dr Browns and nipples ??

I can answer the #1 nipple vs. #2 - they 1s are slower, which is good for most newborn babies... however, when Cailen used the 1s, he was hitting at the bottle and screaming. Everyone told me its because he had reflux.

One night, after an hour for him to get through his bottle, I got frustrated and decided to use the 2 nipples just to speed it along a little (he was about 3-4 wks old) - well, he SUCKED it down happily, without smacking the bottle and no screaming.

It was too slow for him and he was getting frustrated!

Re: Dr Browns and nipples ??

we used the regular bottles & level 1 nipples until DD was about 3 mos, then level 2 until about 7mos then on to level 3.. We changed nipples when DD seemed to be fussy when eating - the nipple was too small and making too much work for her :)

I BF and use the regular ones with no problems, although now that I know what the big ones were for, maybe I would have tried them :) But not now that we have a ton of the regular ones!
