Downstate NY..
Even though we are a few years away from being ready to buy a house - DH & I already know we want to move off the island.
What are some of the better areas about 1 hour out of NYC? (and yes, we do plan on having kids - so schools are being taken into consideration as well)

I went to, and my parents still live in the Minisink School District.
All the schools are on the same campus (elementary, intermediate, middle school, HS). I believe Otisville, which is still part of the district also has a seperate elementary.
All my friends who still live in the area send their kids there.
From what I hear every now and again there is stuff in the HS that goes on (i.e. drugs, fights), but I think ANY school district has that.
It's all about remaining an active and involved parent.
If we could sell our house, and both DH and I could find jobs in the area, I would so consider moving back in a heartbeat.

I think the Fishkill/Hopewell Jct/Wappingers falls area is really nice in Dutchess Co. It's an hour out of the city and the houses are reasonably priced.

Orange County. Warwick is super nice. A little pricey for outside of the city but still, very very nice.

Is that Middletown? DH & I were looking at some houses on realtor.com yesterday in Middletown and they were beautiful, low priced & the taxes  . I mean $7,000 for a 9 acre property!!

I live in middletown and the home prices are wonderful. taxes are very reasonable.
there are a few different school districts, some better than otehrs in the area.
we are actually outside of the City of Middletown in a tiny hamlet called Scotchtown and are zoned into some good schools if we choose to go that route.
I have an awesome house on a half an acre, 1800ish sq, 4k a year.

Orange County has a HUGE population of Long Islanders. We live in Monroe - it's over an hour outside of NYC...it takes me about an hour & 20 minutes to get home from the Whitestone Bridge....just giving you an example. It's very nice up here, but my taxes are still very high. You can more house for your money. We paid $430K 4 year ago on our house which is over 3000 sq ft. And that was in a very good housing market.
