Downs test

So I had my consult with the hi risk dr today and got my results from the NT scan. The liquid was thin on both babies which is a good sign. The finger prick test came back and she prefaced it is not completely accurate with twins since they divide the blood sample in half. Baby A had like a 1 in 327 risk and Baby B had a 1 in 362 risk(or something like that). The trisomys were a 1 in over 6000 chance. Should I be nervous about the downs possibility?? Is that number too low? She said its normal range considering my age. Over 35 has a 1 in 171 chance. So my odds went down. I have a genetic counseling consult on the 8th. Am I freaking over nothing??

Nope, don't worry. There is such a wide range of "normal" that each DR believes in. Trust your doctor. Don't freak out. Mine was like 1 in 700 and my doctor didn't even blink, my sister had a higher number than that and her doc was like, "Ehhhh, I would like it higher." So there's no true good versus bad when it comes to average numbers.

Try not to freak out it will not do you any good. A 1:327 chance is equal to a 0.3% chance which is VERY, VERY low. Is there any way to move up your genetic counseling consult in case you decide you would like to have chorionic villus testing? The test can only be done up until 14 weeks. After that time you have to wait until 16 weeks for amino.

Chorionic Villus testing is the diagnostic test that can be done in the first trimester to determine if a baby has Down's syndrome or another genetic disorder ( it does not test for everything but is fairly comprehensive). The first trimester screen and the newer tests like Maternit21 are screening tests that give odds of trisomy 21,13 and 18 but they are not considered to be diagnostic.

They didn't mention doing that. I am almost 14 weeks nor do I want any invasive testing no matter how accurate. It is not as if I would ever terminate. Just want to know to prepare ourselves so it is not a surprise. I am against all testing but DH is anxious by nature so I would to appease him.

If you are not planning to do any invasive testing then timing is not an issue. When I met with my genetic counselor we discussed the test and what the outcomes mean. She went into a very through explanation of all of our testing options and what the risks of each option is- since you already know you do not want diagnostic testing then all you can really discuss is what your test results mean. Since the test is a screening test all it tells you is your risk of each baby having Down's syndrome, trisomy 13 and trisomy 18.
I would try to relax. Your results are good.
