Downgrading to SMALLER house after kids?
Right now we are more than comfortable with TWO salaries. However, IF I decide to stay home after having DC, we realized it would be REALLY tight for us to stay where we are. We could down grade and live a lot more comfortable. Maybe even a 2 family, to help us pay the rent. It would be a sacrifice (close to all, great school district, etc) for sure, but one I *think* I would be willing to make. I say *think* because everyone keeps telling me I have no idea how I will feel UNTIL the baby is actually here. I may want to run back to work?!
So has anyone done this? What has your experience been? Did you regret it? Wish you had done it sooner?

I think you should take some time to think about it, you may want to work.
It also depends on your current situation. Is there any chance you can refinance? What about adding an extension to the home you are in now instead of moving out of a good district?

i don't think you will really know how you feel until you're in the situation. IMHO, I would wait till you have the baby and then decide.

Re: Downgrading to SMALLER house after kids?
for me, in the beginning i didn't want to work. going back to work after maternity was torture, but when i got into the swing of things, i wouldn't have it any other way. i love my job, company, etc...
now... going back to work, you will pay out boat loads in daycare, unless you have a family member to do it. so... either way, it probably would pay to downgrade, but a decision worth waiting on making...
good luck however you decide. i look forward to seeing which way you go.

I think wait until you see how you feel. I wasn't sure how I'd feel, but during my maternity leave, I was dying to go back to work.
Not because dealing with my son was a lot or anything, I just missed having a sense of "accomplishment" in a work environment. I also appreciate my days off a lot more now.

Re: Downgrading to SMALLER house after kids?
for me, i've always known that i wanted to be a mom...when people would ask what i wanted to be when i grew up, i could never think of anything but being a mom...i always enjoyed working and money but i never wanted a "career" b/c i knew i'd give it up eventually anyway...when i got a puppy i cried everyday for weeks when i had to leave it to go to work if i felt that way about a dog i couldn't imagine how much worse it would be if it was my kid, it think it's just the kind of personality i have - i become attached
so for me, i know 100% that i want to be home and we did what we had to do so that we could live comfy on one salary to do just that...my DH feels the same way as me - he wants me home with our future child/children...
other people love work, it makes them feel accomplished, makes them feel good...and there is nothing wrong with that - my DH is one of these people actually - he'd go insane being home 24/7 raising kids - and not because i don't think he'd be a great father but b/c he loves to work (ok maybe he doesn't love it but he wouldn't be himself if he wasn't out there working hard everyday, he's just not the type that could be home everyday)...
if you know 100% you want to be home, then i would downgrade....but if you are somewhere in the middle i'd wait...there is nothing wrong with wanting to go to work just like there is nothing wrong with wanting to stay home. i say happy mom = happy baby...
