This is all new to me - can you front and rear dormer or at that point are you making a colonial?

Any idea on costs?

Re: Dorming a Cape

You can front and rear dormer at the same time. My MIL did. It doesn't matter what you call it after that. However, will cost $$$$.

Re: Dorming a Cape

You can front and rear dormer a cape, and it can still be a cape or a colonial. If you put all the bedrooms upstairs, it would be a colonial. If you still have two up and two down, it would be a cape. Either way, quite a bit of $$$ to do.

Re: Dorming a Cape

To do a front and rear dormer you are looking at spending at least $100k....Probably closer to $150k

After it is done, the house is usually considered a colonial but it could also be called a double dormered cape

We plan to dormer in about 2 years and expect to spend ~$150K. We already have a partial dormer w/ full bath upstairs.

Re: Dorming a Cape

Is $150K the avg if you're already dormered on one end?

Chat Icon OMG!! that is nuts! why is it so expensive to dormer??! in many parts of the country you can buy a brand new house for $250K. I don't get why it would cost so much for an addition!!

It IS a lot. My brother and SIL dormed the back of their house and put two doghouse dormers in the front (it looks adorable!). They were initially going to push out the back first floor, and ironically, it was cheaper to dormer. Pouring the foundation for the addition was really expensive, they found. The dormer was more economical for them.

Re: Dorming a Cape

Here's a link to our house that we dormered. my house

We did a partial dormer in the front, and a full dormer in the back. We budgeted $50K...and when all was said and done with the entire project...I stopped counting after $125K Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

Re: Dorming a Cape

I've heard $100-150 per sq foot added (depending on the contractor I guess)
