Donating an old car?
Does anyone know where I can do this? I've had my last car (old) sitting in my driveway for too long--- and I want to donate it someplace. Someone told me I should get a receipt for my taxes--- does anyone know anything about this? TIA!

Re: Donating an old car?
We donated our car in November to Kars for Kids. http://www.kars4kids.org/
You get a free hotel stay for two nights and a tax deduction. Good luck!

Re: Donating an old car?
just wanted to say that you can only use the car as a charitable donation if you itemize your deductions. most of the time the car donation sites do NOT tell you this when you donate....and people who use a standard deduction end up not being able to use it on their taxes

Re: Donating an old car?
Definatley get a receipt for tax purposes. We donated to the Tree of Life in 2000 and last year we donated another car to 1-888-Hug-Kids.

We donated our car to habitat for humanities.
You may not get your receipt when they get the car but they will mail it to you for you to use on your taxes

Re: Donating an old car?
The IRS changed the regulations on car donations and it's not so great anymore. You don’t just get to automatically deduct 'blue book value' anymore like you used to. In general, the organizations that you donate the cars to don't actually use them but sell them.
From the IRS website: Starting 1/1/05, if the claimed value of the donated motor vehicle exceeds $500 and the item is sold by the charitable organization, the taxpayer is limited to the gross proceeds from the sale.
Under the new rules, the charitable organization must provide an acknowledgement to the donor within 30 days of the sale stating the amount of gross proceeds.
Alternatively, if the charity significantly uses or materially improves the vehicles, the charity must certify this intended use and duration and provide an acknowledgement to the donor within 30 days of the contribution. If the charity significantly uses or materially improves the vehicle, generally, the donor may deduct the vehicle’s market value.

I also donated to Habitat for Humanity. It should have directions on their website.

You can donate it an animal shelter. Little Shelter in LI would take it.
