Dogs and biting their paws?

I posted awhile ago that my MIL dog that we are watching was obsessively biting/licking his paw. I have been watching him more closely over the past few days when he does this and have discovered that he isnt really biting/licking his paw but he is really biting his nail and licking inbetween his "fingers". When he is doing this, I can here the cracking of the teeth against the nail. Has anyone ever had their dog do this? Is something wrong? I looked at his paws and looked between the "fingers/nails" and I do not see a thing. When I took him to the vet she said his nails and paws were fine. Is there something I should be doing when he does this behaviour?????
THANK YOU

My dog usually does this if her nails are too long. Once they are cut she stops.

i don't hear the "cracking"" noise you explained, against his teeth - but quinn does the same thing with the licking and biting of his paws. i don't know what it is, but they look fine to me, the groomer and the vet. i chalked it up to a quinn-ism Chat Icon

I read somewhere that it can mean they are allergic to something, possibly their food.
I would ask the vet.

My dog would lick his paws and I asked the vet and it was allergies.

It could be an allergy, or it could be that they nailbed is uncomfortable to the dog for some reason. If the claws are too long & hit the ground it can send a weird sensation up their "toe" that seems to concentrate at the nail bed.
