dogs and benadryl
My dog has allergies, the vet said to give her 25 mg of benadryl. I bought a package for her but 25 mg is one pill...that's what I would take and ollie is only 20 lbs! I don't know if I misheard him or not but that sounds like a lot. Has anyone given their dog benadryl? What dosage? TIA

Re: dogs and benadryl
Did the vet say benedryl or children's benedryl?
I would call your vet back to ask -- better safe than sorry!
I give my horses regular (adult) benedryl on occasion and I give them 25mg per 100 pounds of body weight. A friend of mine has min pins and JRTs and I know she uses children's benedryl. I don't remember the dosage she uses, though.
I'd call the vet back and ask again for peace of mind!

He definitely said regular benadryl but I must have misheard the dosage if you give your horses 25 mg! I'm going to give him a call, thank you.

Re: dogs and benadryl
i would call because my vet recommended i give them children's benadryl. i give one to my jack russell when he's flipping out during storms (he was a hurricane katrina rescue and his heart races out of control and he flips out. it's supposed to calm him down)

Re: dogs and benadryl
We give our 16 lb dog one 25mg pill of regular benadryl, vet's orders, and she generally acts like she hasn't taken anything at all.

No, I give my horses around 2500 mg depending on the horse. I said I give 25 mg per 100 pounds of body weight. My horses aren't 100 pounds - they are 900 and 1300 pounds.
ETA - Also, we have to always take into account that animals and humans can metabolize different medications differently. I don't think it holds true that 25 mg per hundred pounds of body weight in a horse would be the same for a dog or a human. (And I can give my horses as much as 50 mg per 100 pounds...)
Definitely call the vet just to be sure!

My Bella is 37 lbs,and she has bad allergies, and the vet said that 25 mg is good... I just feels it knocks her out all day, so I give her half with each meal...
