Dog & Cat?
If you have both, how do they get along? We have a 4 year old golden retriever and are getting a 9 month old cat on sat. Hoping they become fast friends.

Re: Dog & Cat?
We had a dog 1st. When we got the cat (about 7 yrs old), he (the dog) was very curious and she was okay with him. I guess she was around dogs before. Now they're good buddies. She sneaks up on him, chases him and steals his bed sometimes! They play around pretty rough, but they're about the same size and the cat holds her own, lol. Now my other dog (we got him last) doesn't interact with her that much. Sometimes he'll play with her, but not very often. They really don't bother each other.

Re: Dog & Cat?
I had a cat first and then got a dog. The dog loves to chase the cat. They had to test the dog out with cats first though. Some dogs do not like cats. I had read alot of articles about how you should introduce them but, in the end they were fine but, my cat likes to swat at the dog. I would put something that smells like the cat in your house for the dog to smell. When you bring the cat in I would also keep the dog on a leash for them to get to know each other first/

Re: Dog & Cat?
I have two dogs (Olli & Teemu) and two cats (Jack & Anabelle). Anabelle gets along well with Olli. Sometimes they will play wrestle (and then Teemu will run over to 'save' Anabelle - it is HILARIOUS).
Teemu and Anabelle are IN LOVE. Wherever Teemu goes, Anabelle follows. If anyone messes with Anabelle, Teemu takes care of it (lol). They sleep together at night, and snuggle together during the day.
Now Jack, on the other hand, hates them all. So I guess it just depends on the mix. Jack is just a little skiddish, and he is more of a people cat (than a cat/dog lover - although he LOVED my old cat Molly before she passed away - he followed her around all day). The dogs like to bug him (if I even say his name, they look around the room for him, so they can go sniff him cause he is more mysterious to them than Anabelle), and he generally will only hang out if the dogs are sleepy and won't bug him.
We had Jack (Cat) then added Teemu (Dog) then added Anabelle (Cat) then added Olli (Dog).

Re: Dog & Cat?
I have a Golden and when my DH moved in with us he had a cat. My golden at the time was a little over a year old and his cat was about 6 years old. It took some time for the cat to get adjusted to the dog but eventually she did. Since DH and I have been together we added another cat to the family. The kitten was about 8 weeks old when we took him home and he attached himself to my Golden. They love each other and are the best of friends. Sometimes I think that cat loves the dog more than he loves me!

Re: Dog & Cat?
We had a cat first and then got a dog. The cat was actually my family pet for years and then I took her to live with us when we got married. We then got the dog a year later. It's now been almost 2 years since getting the dog, and the cat STILL doesn't like her. The dog seems to love the cat and is very curious about her. The cat still hisses at the dog and swats her when she gets too close (which happens often since the dog wants to be near the cat all the time and doesn't seem to get the hint that the cat can't stand her ). It's been a little better lately. It's actually gotten to the point where they can be in the same room together as long as the dog keeps her distance. It think it's just because the cat is old, grumpy, and very territorial. I think it really depends on the individual animal. My dog seems to love other animals, and I think if we ever got another cat, she would be very accepting of it.
