Does anyone know why...
some REs prescribe anitbiotics before a water sonogram? DH and I both took four pills each last night and I can't remember why. I know I'm at increased risk for infection, but why?

Re: Does anyone know why...
I think its b/c they dilate your cervix and to reduce any infection that might occur while your cervix is open. But I am not 100% sure I am sure someone else knows a better answer.

Re: Does anyone know why...
I assume it is because of the risk of infection. I had two water sonos and the first time me and DH took four pills in one day together and the second time only I took antiobiotics alone for five days. I don't know why it was different each time.

Re: Does anyone know why...
There is always the chance for infection whenever they do a procedure. However, the reason you both have to take the antibiotic is to treat an infection that is very hard to tell if you have by a routine office test - I think it's called ureaplasma.
Wait - I found it on my paperwork. It is called ureaplasma and it is a "bacteria that may live in the urinary systems of both men and women. The antibiotics will confer protection from one year from the date of treatment."

I think it is coincidential that you and dh are taking the pills b/f your water sono. Like the OP mentioned, it is good for one year protection. They give you the antibiotics for any upcoming IF treatments, eg. IVF, IUIs

Wow, that one dose (four pills) can protect us for up a year?!? How is that possible?

Re: Does anyone know why...
They put me alone on two days of antibiotics after my water sono. No mention of DH. Hmpfh.
