Does anyone know anything about Beacon, NY?
It's in Dutchess Co. My sister is looking for a home and saw something she liked in Beacon, but we know nothing about the area.
Any input would be great! Feel free to express honest opinions.
TIA!

I *think* there is a nuclear power station there, or very close. Not sure if it's in use though.

I lived in Poughkeepsie for a while and my dad still lives there! From what I remember, the Newburgh/Beacon area is not the best. I would stay with the Poughkeepsie side of the Hudson River...
There are a few school districts that are definitely better than others--Arlington in Poughkeepsie is v. good...Check out school listings and violence reports.

I started high school in Hyde Park...It's not bad--I think much better than Newburgh/Beacon, but it is culture shock from LI. Let's put it this way--about half the students take off for the first day of hunting season. I wound up going to boarding school because they didn't offer too much in terms of AP courses, etc. Arlington school district is better, and there is another tiny district that is very good in Poughkeepsie...

Re: Does anyone know anything about Beacon, NY?
A friend of mine at work bought a Victorian in Beacon about a year ago. She's forever talking about how great the area is and how it's undergoing "a renaissance." She says it's a lot of city people migrating north and kind or resettling the area, making it very artsy and eclectic. Her favorite line—"It's so not Long Island mall culture." I also remember Newsday did a big feature on Beacon a couple of years ago.

Re: Does anyone know anything about Beacon, NY?
I was born in Beacon. We moved to Long Island when I was 10.
I still remember my old address:
24 Roundtree Court Beacon, NY 12508
I was little, but from what I remember, it was a great place. It could have been where I lived, all young couples starting families. Lots of kids to play with, I really have some awesome memories.
I still remember my phone number from Beacon, 831-8441.
Crazy how some things stick with you.

Re: Does anyone know anything about Beacon, NY?
I currently live in So. Dutchess Cty (not in Beacon) and from what I've read in the local paper and from what I heard from friends here in Dutchess Beacon is definatley up and coming. However it is a City so there ARE shady areas in Beacon like every other city in the U.S. and they're also gorgeous areas.
I also know that the school's are the best, but not all the homes in Beacon are in the Beacon school district.
Also Indian Point is in Westchester Cty not Dutchess. I forgot the name of the town.

Beacon IS on the East side (p'keepsie side) of the river.
Newburgh is in Orange County on the west side of the Hudson River.
The Newburgh/Beacon bridge (I84) is named as such beacause it connects the two.

Re: Does anyone know anything about Beacon, NY?
I can't really speak much to Beacon per se, but I do agree with a previous poster that I have read articles in the paper how areas of Beacon (and the Hudson Valley in general) that may have been depressed are being revived.
Art museums and shops cropping up, old homes being restored, etc.... For decades factories kept closing in these hudson river towns (Nabisco, General Motors) and forced the workers to move, now people are starting to come back.
I will also tell you that back in 2001 when we were looking, I actually emailed a reporter for the local paper that was writing about the influx of city people moving up north. I asked him about certain towns and what he thought..... all he told me was to look into Beacon and I didn't even ask him about that side of the river!
If I can dig up some of the old reading I'll forward it on to you!

I have heard that Arlington SD is HUGE (Sachem sized) and not so great. My cousin used to work there.
Not sure if Beacon is in that SD

Beacon is not in that SD, and Arlington is pretty much top 2 in the Poughkeepsie area. There is a tiny district that is very good...I cannot remember the name of the district though. Beacon has its own district.

OK, I know Newburgh is really not good...If it were me, and I was moving back up there, I think I would do New Paltz, which is more arty and more of a college town.

Re: Does anyone know anything about Beacon, NY?
Thank you so much for all of your responses, ladies! You've helped tremendously! Her realtor did tell her it's "up and coming", but we all know how realtors are (being one myself).
She knows Newburgh is not a "good" area. As of now she has no children and is not married, so while SDs are important, they're not deal breakers in her case.
D - My sister has lived and worked in Manhattan forever and she would "never live" on Long Island. To each her own, though.
Tara - too funny! I grew up in WI and moved to NY when I was 12. My former address was N73W36398 South Shore Drive I still remember my number, too! And I'm MUCH older than you!
Donna - Any info you find would be great and very helpful. She's making an offer today!
Thanks again everyone!

Does his college have a nursing program and are they looking for professors? My sister has her PhD and may decide to go back to educating (and pursuing a 2nd PhD )

Re: Does anyone know anything about Beacon, NY?
I went to Mount Saint Mary College which was right across the river from Beacon and have a friend who lives there as well.
She is a single mom, and unfortunately lives in one of the less desirable areas, but I have to say that on a whole I think Beacon has some beautiful, old, victorian homes and compaired to other places I've been, its not all that bad.
Also MSMC (my college) has a great nursing program, if she is looking into teaching.
FM me if you'd like more info!
