Re: Does anyone have....

lifestyle management: 'TRY' not to eat 3 hours before bed or exercise, especially acidic/spicey food

I was on protonix too. Just switched to a different RX.

Re: Does anyone have....

I stopped eating the things that triggered it and concentrated on portion control so I wouldn't overeat.

Now I don't need medicine for it. My biggest triggers were coffee, tomatoes and cranberries (or any high citrus fruit).

Bravo. Amazing what a foreign concept this can be. Many people don't need pills, they just need self control. Chat Icon

Re: Does anyone have....

I usually did not have any symptoms of it. I did not get dx with it until I was having vocal problem/vocal strain.

Then when I was dx with IBS, my dr put me on protonix. No matter what I do with my diet, I will probably have to be on it for life, because it is irritating the tissue in my esophagus/near the stomach

Re: Does anyone have....

Yes I do!
Tomtoes are my enemy, but if get a bad case, I take a pepcid ac, or if I don't have that around, believe it or not, eat a green apple (granny smith). It really works. Something about the juice neuturalizes the acidity inside of you. I keep one by my bed every so often in case of a midnight "attack".

I'm sorry. Chat Icon

I never knew that about granny smiths, but herbal tea with camomile but no caffeine is good too. And believe it or not, CHOCOLATE. That's a good reason to eat chocolate. Chat Icon

Re: Does anyone have....

I had terrible AR a few years ago. I was on meds, I avoided certain foods and it didn't get better. I had an upper GI and they still couldn't figure it out.

Then my perscription ran out on one of my "daily" medications and I didn't take it for a week. All of a sudden, no more AR!! I called the doctor and they said AR wasn't listed as a side effect but upset stomach was listed so they never made a correlation. Chat Icon

I changed my diet & detoxed. I found that most of the Rx's did not work, & when they did other side affects were making me feel worse....

That's what I ended up doing. I eat small meals, not a lot of acidic foods - once in a while is okay, though, and nothing right before bed.

I was on Zegerid for about a year and the side effects were horrendous. I truly prefer watching how I eat.

Re: Does anyone have....

DH has it and has to avoid certain foods that he used to love; spicy foods and citrus drinks (like OJ) were the main culprits. He still gets it about once a week and takes Pepcid complete.

Re: Does anyone have....

I have it too. During my pregnancies it was so awful, now it's manageable. I use regular Rolaids. If I eat till I'm full, it bothers me so I try to stop before I get too full. Also dont eat too close to bedtime (2 hours before) and avoid certain foods. Apples bother mine a lot, so does anything with tomatoes spicy food, soda. But almost anything can trigger it if Im too full, that's the big thing I need to watch. When I was pg, even water gave me acid reflux.

Re: Does anyone have....

Just checking in to see how everyone's acid/gastritis is.
I was diagnosed w/ gastritis in March. It sucks... I havent had pizza, tomato sauce, oj, fried foods, alcohol for almost a year. and i was feeling great until i had anpther setback and it came back w/ a vengence and is horrible. I started taking protonix again. I used to take it but had to stop b/c I was on it for a while and got horrible diarrhea and felt dizzy in am. hopefully I wont need to stay on it for too long.
I cannot pinpoint what i did to aggravate it, I didnt eat any trigger food. it is becoming very depressing.
anyone have any success stories of treating gastritis/Gerd/ acid reflux?
