Does anyone else find all these new tax incentives ludacrous?
First it was $8,500 for buying a house, now there's one for buying a new car and who knows what else. Where the hell is all this money coming from?? That's right, our tax dollars. I'm paying for other people's incentives, but where are my incentives. Maybe the big $50 bucks extra a month in my paycheck

Re: Does anyone else find all these new tax incentives ludacrous?
While I know some people bought houses and did not get the opportunity to get $8500 at all 2 or 3 years ago, I'm still a little ticked that I bought a house last year and have to pay the $8500 back, while people this year don't. I missed the cut off by 38 days.
The car incentive, doesn't bother me as much.

Re: Does anyone else find all these new tax incentives ludacrous?
the house one doesn't bother me- I guess b/c I am planning on taking advantage of it
I would not have bought a house this year otherwise- I would have waited another year
but I put an offer in on foreclosure that most people would RUN from - so I see it as a good thing- I am sure the people on my new block would agree- b/c the eyesore will now become on the nicest homes on the block
The $8500 will go along way towards me improving the property- which is the whole point of it
there are plenty of tax incentives that don't apply to me- but I don't disagree with them b/c of that

Re: Does anyone else find all these new tax incentives ludacrous?
I have to pay back my incentive as well. $500 per year. I am fine with that and deeply appreciate the interest free loan, which I will use to pay for some work on my house (hiring a contractor who will in turn make some money in this economy, and pay taxes and an employee, who will use that money to shop in any random store, helping that store make some money.....thereby HOPEFULLY putting money BACK into the economy.
and since I will be paying it back IN MY LIFETIME...I feel pretty good about it actually.
we bought a car last year right after we bought our house...no retro incentive there...but we are paying the bank that lent us money interest every month, so they are making money there too.
these incentives are to lure people on the fence about buying items to take the plunge, which will help us ALL in the long run. more income equals more taxes equals a way to pay this stuff off.
the circle of life.
at least, that is the way this simple mind sees it.
ETA: my husband is an accountant. tax incentives are NOTHING new...they are now just open to a broader range of people.
this is the first year in my almost 34 years that I will be able to claim a tax incentive for having a kid...but I don't begrudge those that having been claiming before me. nor did I begrudge homeowners before I owned my home.

Anyone that took the credit for buying a house last year must pay it back 500 a year for 15 years. While what Ophelia says is true, it stimulates the economy, I don't like that some people will get a free 8500 if they buy THIS year. I do appreciate the interest free loan. But this is using my own money over 15 years.
I would be totally fine with the gov't still offering it if EVERYONE had to pay it back. These new homebuyers are now using MY tax money to put in their pockets or do work on their houses. I'm basically handing my well earned money to them. (At least this is the way I see it).

Coming back for '09 though. You get screwed if you hired a contractor to do the install.
Lucky for me we did the installation ourselves. The law states you take the credit when "the items were put into service"... not when they were bought.

I think that we need to do what we can to stimulate the economy. I would prefer to see the money go to everyday people like homebuyers and car buyers then to special interest groups , the wealthy, etc. I think that it may help the US get back on track. I am hopeful

Re: Does anyone else find all these new tax incentives ludacrous?
Wow so when you get to write off your children on your taxes should i complain because I chose not to reproduce yet? NO!
Does it stink that someone purchased their house last year during the market down but only got a loan instead of "free" money - kinda. But that incentive was written during the beginning of the major meltdown - this one was written during the height of it and they need people to buy the empty homes on our neighborhoods. Is it working - YES! I am noticing houses flying off the market.
Not sure on the other tax incentives out there for cars, etc. But I know that most of these programs existed for a while they just gave it to everyone.

If you found a secret to write off my child out of my taxes, you tell me how it's done!
