DOE or LI?

I have tenure in the DOE and have been invited to a second interview in a wealthy north shore LI district. Would it be crazy to leave the DOE's safety? I don't know which would be a better choice...my current commute is awful, but there's a chance I could get into a queens school that would cut my commute in 1/2.

I have to disagree with the other posters or at least pose this question to you, how many years have you been in the DOE? I say this because I teach in the city, going into my 17th year. I reside far out on LI. In my first let's say 8 years I'd try for LI, come very close with demos and all but never did land a job. Things on LI are so unstable and it seems to be getting worse. You'd be taking a HUGE risk leaving your tenured city job for LI and I feel you'd really need to think about all the pros and cons and prepare yourself for the possibility that you may not have this job beyond a year or two and then what...you lost your "life" practically, your income, etc.

Sorry, this is just my personal feelings, but good luck in your decision and if you do get a job there and take it all the prayers in the world that you're a lucky one and it becomes your forever job.

Definitely LI- you said it's a wealthy district, which means it will be stable and chances of excessing are slim.

I can understand your hesitation, but it really can't hurt to go for the LI job. Even if things don't end up working out, you can always go back to the DOE.

A close relative works in a VERY wealthy North Shore district and they excess every year, some tenured teachers at that. It's the luck of the draw unfortunately when it comes to districts. Sometimes the neighborhoods with less money lose fewer positions because of funding like title 1, etc. I think it also depends on what you are going for. I have been offered jobs as a reading teacher but funding isn't always guaranteed from year to year. It never hurts to try but I totally get the hesitation. It's the very reason I haven't left.

What is your area? I ask bc some areas IMO are more secure like major subjects whereas the arts, guidance are often first to get cut. Personally at this point I wouldn't give up my senority, an excess in li is a layoff in NYC you still get paid until you find a job, big difference

I've taught on LI before and was excessed a few years ago, which makes me even more nervous to have to risk it all, all over again.

I always perceived LI districts as the holy grail, mostly b/c I feel they truly respect our profession and treat us like professionals (lay offs aside). But there is something to be said about the size of the DOE that is comforting knowing that should a school have to excess, then at least we could get absorbed elsewhere.

I guess I'll see what they offer (teachers in this district, according to their newest contract, must pay 25% of the health benefit premiums) in order to determine if it is even worth considering.

I have weighed this question for almost 10 years... I have tenure but just can't do the commute anymore. I do 2 hours each way... It has taken its toll on physically and mentally. By the time I get home, I'm too tired to play with dd and I felt that I needed to take the leap of faith to get onto LI. I am only getting older and was feeling miserable. Walking away from the doe is going to be tough for me... Tenure, seniority and security... But I just can't do the commute anymore. I wish u the best of luck and u need to weigh the pros and cons. I've been doing this for years and I just ran out of gas this last year and really felt 100% about walking away. I need to figure out how to walk away and leave the door open just in case I need to go back though.

Thanks, XO, on the bad days my total commute is about 4.5 hours, good days 2, but that's only if I leave at 5:30 in the morning -- anything after that is a gamble. I'm exhausted EVERY.DAY. and don't have the energy or patience for my family, hence my need to move one...which truly stinks b/c I love my school, the kids & my colleagues. But really, I cannot see myself doing that commute anymore.

Congrats on your new position...hopefully I'll be able to update with some news too :)
