DOE and teachers who have applied for COBRA
I am currently on leave after having had my daughter Oct 31st. I applied for 12 weeks of FMLA, but was only given 10 weeks of coverage, plus 2 weeks childcare (no benefits). (This is because I took a leave last year that fell within the same 12 month period). I have been told that the only way to get medical coverage for those 2 weeks is by applying for COBRA...
I have a few questions, and would appreciate anyone's experience, if you can offer it...
1. I only need COBRA coverage for 2 weeks, not the entire month, has anyone ever been pro-rated the fee for unused time?
2. If COBRA runs monthly, does the coverage start and end on the 1st of the month, or is from whenever your last day of coverage ends? For example, I need coverage starting Jan. 9th, do they consider the entire month of January as one month of coverage, or would it be from Jan. 9- Feb.9?
3. When you returned to work, were there any complications with having your health insurance reinstated? Were there any forms you had to fill out?
I am just so pissed over this whole situation, and I know that many of you are asking yourselves, "Why doesn't she just ask her payroll secretary?". Believe me, if she wasn't completely inept at her job, I would... Thanks to those of you who have read through this post and to anyone who can offer guidance, advice or experience.

i do not know about the cobra, but if you are really concerned about not having coverage for 2 weeks, then why don't you just go back to work after the 10th week?

Honestly I would just go without coverage for two weeks I think it would be too much of a pia to get it for such a short time

I don't have any answers but, I too have a crappy payroll secretary. My best advice is to call Human Resources. They were really helpful for me when my payroll secretary thought it was her job to withhold my paycheck since I went absent w/o pay for 4 days after I had my baby. I feel your pain...
