Doctor Frustration
Reading all these posts about avoiding certain foods or beverages has me wanting to beat my head up against the wall.
Why is it that all the OBs cannot get together and just decide once and for all a standard set of guidelines.
For instance, in 3 pregnancies (this being my 3rd), my OB has never once told me to avoid deli meats, tuna, or diet drinks (sodas or crystal light). And I have 2 very healthy happy boys and have had 3 very uneventful pregnancies (no GD or anything like that).
I just do not get why there is such discrepancies in what certain doctors will "allow" their patients?
My OB has always told me everything is ok in moderation. He did not ever give me a list of "banned" items.
Rant over.... I just hate it when there is so much controversy over what people are "allowed" to have or not.

Re: Doctor Frustration
I told myself a long time ago (waaaay before PG when I had other medical issues) that they call it "practicing" medicine for a reason.

Re: Doctor Frustration
thank you! and amen to that. Also, there's the guilt factor - i have a friend who told me that her doctor told her to stay away from all artificial sweeteners - i tried to explain that i read it was ok in moderation etc... and she said "well why would you want to risk it" - so of course i felt AWFUL because i've been drinking diet ginger ale with dinner cause i'm so bored with water....
but then i have another who told me her doctor told her to go ahead and have her 1 espresso daily and hot dogs if she wanted them and occasional wine and he was a high risk Park Ave. ob/gyn - she had 3 healthy kids - its making me nuts!!!

Re: Doctor Frustration
I recently had my RE tell me that he learned absolutely nothing in med school and most of the learning has been on the job

Re: Doctor Frustration
It makes me crazy because.. and this ALWAYS happens... you get on boards like this (like Babycenter for example) and someone will post something like "My doctor says no to this, this and that" and someone else says, "My doctor says I can have that"
and then people get all rude and judgemental... and UGH!
I just hate it. Its like a giant conspiracy to make the PG women of the world go nuts and go at each others throats... then they blame it on hormones!

Re: Doctor Frustration
You are so right - it really is frustrating. What's worse is that a simple conversation or question ends up making everyone feel guilty because we have all been told different things. I think it's cruel - we are all so nervous at this point and instead of easing that - all of these conflicting things that doctors and articles say make us even more nervous.

Re: Doctor Frustration
I think that just like moms, different doctors have different tolerance for risk taking. Some are very, very conservative and will tell you to avoid anything that carries even the smallest chance of harm. Others weigh the risks to the baby against the comforts of the mommy and decide that slight chances should be taken. I don't think the doctors disagree about what is or isn't risky, just about whether or not a risk should be taken.

My OB never gave me a list of things to avoid either. I wouldnt let all the "wives tales" drive you crazy. Just eat healthy and everything in moderation.

Re: Doctor Frustration
I think a lot of doctors just don't know what is safe and what isn't and don't research it. www.safefetus.com is a good resource to see if certain drugs are safe to take.
You will get the same thing from peds. as well. Some will say it's okay to put cereal in a bottle for a 2 month old (despite what the AAP says) and some will say it's not. Some will say it's okay to start cows milk at 9 months, some will not.
