Do your 4 year olds know how to write all their letters?

Just curious.

Megan can write her name and some other letters. Shes slowly getting the hang of it. Just wondering what other kids her age are doing.

DD is newly 4 (August). She can write all of her letters - some really good - some ok and her first name.

We just started teaching her to write her last name. It's long so its hard (10 letters) but she's getting it.

Our biggest thing with her is having her write everything straight. She tends to go all over the page or out of order.

DD writes her first name and a handful of other letters. Maybe 8 others, besides what is in her name? This is a recent development, though... before about 3 months ago she wouldn't write anyhting, not even her name, and refused to discuss letters/numbers, no matter what I did. She will be 5 in February...

Not from memory. She can write her name. She can recognize and name all letters. But at this stage, she can't write letters if you ask her to. They trace them at this point in her class.

Yes, and he can read. He comes home from school, sits down and just writes all afternoon long. He writes stories (they don't really make sense) and he makes lists of the kids in his class, and he writes the lyrics to all the songs they sing in school. Writing is his latest favorite activity.

No, and I don't think it's something developmentally they should be doing YET. Maybe by the mid/end of Kingergarten for sure or else they will be "behind"! Isn't that what Kingergarten is for?

Yes, Ava can write all of her upper case letters and is working on writing all of her lower case letters. We don't push it, she likes to do it on her own with books we bought her to practice. we also have a dry erase board with the letters and she traces them on there, then writes them in a notebook.

I would say early 4 DS could write all of his uppercase letters - but that was day care's doing.

Ella can write all her letters - she prefers uppercase, so I'm not 100% on her lower case skills...

I remember one day last year she wrote out the alphabet with each letter reversed as a mirror image. Freaked me out until I read up that its "normal".

She's always been interested in writing/letters.

By late 4 Jack was able to write the alphabet fairly legibly in upper case, his name and a handful of other letters in upper, lower case. He really mastered writhing in K

My son could not write at all at four. He could not even identify al his lowercase letters. In kindergarten he learned it and caught up to his peers no problem.

Yes, she was able to at 3. She learned her letters from that stupid ClickStart My First Computer thing and her Leapster is where she learned to write them!

ETA: She only knew uppercase. She is just now learning lowercase in kindergarten.

Nate knew how to write all his letters and a few sight words.

Now my youngest, I don't think will be writing all his letters in the next 6 months. We're will working on him recognizing all of them.

DS (4 in July) can write his first name and all the letters. I'm trying to break him of the habit of doing all caps. That's how I taught him over a year ago and then found out they now teach it caps and lower case. He can do it caps and lower, but his habit is to write it all caps. They are working on names in school now too.

DD is 4.5 years old. She knows how to write her letters, uppercase and lowercase and some words as well as her name.
Right now we are trying to get her to write in a straight line.

I teach Kindergarten and a lot of kids do not know how to write all of their letters when they start. Most kids write their name in all capitals.

It is important for them to be able to recognize letters and realize that they make sounds. Not all the sounds when they start, but most of the consonants.


By the middle of Kindergarten we expect the kids to know all of their letters and sounds, and by the end of Kindergarten they are reading 32 sight words (usually more).

I wouldn't put too much emphasis on letter writing as many districts have their own writing program which has specific ways to write the letters.
