Do you trim your cat's claws?
My kitty's nails are getting so long and they definitely need to be trimmed I think. I'm too nervous to do it myself since I've never done it before.
Do you guys trim them yourself or have the vet do it?
How much would it cost to have something like that done?

Re: Do you trim your cat's claws?
My vet will do it for $20, but #1, I have 4 cats, #2, I just don't feel like bringing them all there so I do it myself. I bought that pedicure thing but they're not real keen on it.
If you do end up doing it, just be careful and make sure you have that powder that makes them stop bleeding should you hit the nerve. You can actually see the nerve on a cat so it shouldn't be too bad.

We cut their nails ourselves. Just be careful not to cut past the clear part of the nail.

I cut them. When I go to the vet with them I have them do it but I do it regularly.
I have a curved clipper that's good for kitty nails.
Stay on the clear part of the nails.
I give them treats before and after.

Yes! It takes a couple of times to figure out what 'body grip' is best for you and kitty. Some vet techs suggest wrapping them in a towel so they are easier to hold. DH gets down on the floor with her, and kind of tucks her body under his arm, like a football
And definetly use the treats. We put some treats out, and right after she is done eating, grab her, do it and then more treats after. And we keep the treats in her sight real close so that makes her know more are coming.
First couple of times are difficult - but keep on doing it and kitty will get used to it more.

yes! The squirm all over the place. I hold them on my lap like they are sitting and I keep kissing them on their heads and talking to them. When they meow I meow back.
remember the thumb nail!

What I laugh about is that I'd think that by now she should realize that it doesn't hurt, and that it makes her life so much easier having short nails.
Before we cut them, she usually gets stuck in the rug, on the couch, etc. You'd think she'd be RELIEVED that we're helping her!

Re: Do you trim your cat's claws?
I have trimmed my cat's back claws before, with a regular nail clipper. My cat is pretty old and lazy though, so she didn't really squirm around too much which made it easier. If your cat won't stay still, you should have someone help you hold her. I've heard putting a towel over an animal's head helps to calm them down.

Re: Do you trim your cat's claws?
I cut them myself. It cuts down on them clawing things. When I hear them scratching things I know it is time for a trim.
My one cat I have been doing it since he was a kitten, so he doesn't care. He actually Purrs wihile I do it.
my other cat was a shelter rescue at 2 years old. She's tougher, she used to try to get away/bite me. But she is getting used to it.
I've never cut any of them and made them bleed. Just stick to the clear part of the nail.
I actually find cutting cat's nails is much easier than dog's nails.

I agree that the cats nails are much easier to cut than a dogs nails. My cats nails grow so fast, I cut them often and they're pretty good about it!

Sushi has NOT been cooperating lately. It was easier when she was tiny. I'd wait until she fell asleep and clip them then. She would sleep right through it. Now she wont sit still and she growls at me.

Re: Do you trim your cat's claws?
DH holds, I cut. We give treats at the beginning, after the first paw (we only do the front two), and after we're done. Small treats, but enough to make the experience a positive one.
Now that kitty can't have treats due to his urinary tract troubles, we give him hairball remedy as a treat because he loves it.
