Do you think I can hide?

Alright...the story is Im untenured and preggers. Im trying to hide the fact that I am, and hope to only fill them in on my situation in September. Im due in November.
I will be 18 weeks by the time summer break comes around. Will I be showing or is it possible to hide?

Re: Do you think I can hide?

I would be careful about that. Some contracts have a stipulation that you need to give them 2 months warning. I didn't let my job know until I was at 16 weeks though. I am untenured, but getting tenure on TuesdayChat Icon I was going to wait until after the board meeting to tell them but I also didn't want to be sneaky. I told them a couple of weeks ago (I am 21 weeks today). Noone has said anything. I also was about to call the union president to find out what the stipulations were about getting pregnant and being untenured. I wasn't sure myself.

Re: Do you think I can hide?

I think a lot of women start to show by then. Personally, I wouldn't hide it from them. It puts your employer in a difficult situation if they need to find a replacement for you after only two months into the school year. You wouldn't be giving them much notice, especially if you need to go out earlier than expected.

Good points to both of you... Can I ask what your unions position was about pregnancy and being untenured? Im so nervous about having that "meeting" and telling the principal. She hates me already

Re: Do you think I can hide?

I never called the president. I spoke to my union leader and asked her - she recommended I tell them. She didn't know what the contract was in terms of how many months. I had also told my dept. chair before hand - when I found out in Jan and I was only 1 month and asked her suggestions. We were going to wait, like I said, but there was also a MRSA outbreak in my school so I wanted them to know that I was pg!

Re: Do you think I can hide?

I'm 18 weeks and am obviously preggers....

There's no way I could hide it. actually, one co-worked spotted my belly bloat before 10 weeks!

I seriously doubt many women could hide it well at 18 weeks....

Re: Do you think I can hide?

Those close to me in the building were taking guesses around 10-12w and most people were pretty sure of it at 14w, but I told after Winter Break at 16w. By 18w it was pretty obvious. I think you have some time before the school year ends. See if there is someone who knows the contract well that you can confide in or your building union rep. I have no advice on telling your principal. My administrators were very happy for me and looking for the good news, as we have good relationships.

Re: Do you think I can hide?

I think it depends on the person. My friend is 15 weeks and most people don't know at work.

As for telling people that is your decision.

I would look into your union policy on maternity leaves and being untenured.

My union's policy is that if you are untenured you are entitled to take your leave but it bumps back your tenure date by the amount of time you take.

Re: Do you think I can hide?

You might be able to hide it - I am 24 weeks and only if I wear maternity shirts can you tell I am pregnant. It depends on your body and how you carry.

Re: Do you think I can hide?

I know nothing about unions and tenure.. sorry

But I know that if I wore loose clothes most dont know Im 20weeks

There's a lady at my office who didnt tell them until she was 7months Chat Icon

It was sort of frowned on. But no one noticed her bulge.. she wore a lot of sweater sets, etc.
