Do you HAVE to gut a bathroom?
i am looking to basically just replace everything in a bathroom-- not remodel it completely. i had one contractor give me a price for essentially just doing that-- taking out old tub, toilet, floor tile, wall tile and vanity, putting in new.
Another contractor told me we had to gut down to the studs if we wanted to start replacing stuff.
i dont need to spend 15k remodeling this bathroom-- now or later. just want to update and freshen to my taste without changing layout.

Re: Do you HAVE to gut a bathroom?
I think its more involved than just taking a tub out and replacing it, because the tile on the floor around it will have to be broken away and then fixed again, so that might be the problem.

Gutting a bathroom shows you all of the leaking pipes, bad solder joints, dangerous wiring, lack of insulation, etc, etc.
It's also hard to replace a tub without damaging tile.

Re: Do you HAVE to gut a bathroom?
I think it's the tilling part that could get tricky. If you just want to replace the vanity, tub, toliet you can definitely do it without gutting it but once you want to take out the old tile and replace it, I think your best bet is to gut it.
In the midst of planning my own bathroom reno right now. The toilet and vanity were previously replaced in our bathroom and are fine but now that we want to change the tile, we're basically ripping everything out.
Good luck!

Re: Do you HAVE to gut a bathroom?
you can do it but the tub is tricky to replace (you might want to reglaze the tub then) only reason is when you cut caulk and try to lift the tub out typically its heavy and it doesn't want to to out gracefully.

Re: Do you HAVE to gut a bathroom?
That's what we were initially looking to do with our upstairs bathroom.
In the end after pricing out what we NEEDED to have done and what it would cost to gut and redo it was really a minimal price difference. In the end, we are gutting it.
Water was seeping through one of the walls in the tub/shower and causing it to leak through our kitchen ceiling. We thought we could get away with just fixing the problem, but it entailed ripping out the tiles/walls (3 of them) in the tub. Putting up new sheetrock (waterproof of course and then retiling) which would have meant having to retile the entire bathroom since it's tile original to the house.

Re: Do you HAVE to gut a bathroom?
thanks-- we would definitely be taking out the old tile and putting in new tile... but this one contractor said we need to go down to the studs, and I am not sure that's true.

honestly once you remove the tile on the walls the sheetrock will probably be damaged or have water/mold. Putting new sheetrock (mold resistant) is really the right thing to do and is not that expensive.

ditto if you have tile, or even regular wall taking out a tub and the rest will damage whatever it's attached to..we did this, and it's not like you can just cut the tub out neatly and replace it...

Re: Do you HAVE to gut a bathroom?
We did the tub, tile floor, vanity and four tiles up in the shower...it came out horrible. None of the tiles matched (had wall tile throughout bathroom). For a few extra dollars we should have just gutted it.

Consider what moisture would do in terms of termites as well. Id just go for it, but this is coming from someone who would hire Abby's day care classmates to paint her house.

Re: Do you HAVE to gut a bathroom?
From personal experience, I would just gut and redo the whole room. The things we found behind our walls were horrible (bad electric work, rusted plumbing, etc.) I would rather just do it right and cut corners on something else like buy a less expensive tile, vanity, etc.
