Do we need mattress pads for the crib mattress?
If I don't need it, I would prefer to avoid it because my crib sheet is a tight fit as it is. Do I need a mattress pad under it? I will probably get the sheet saver. I would rather not waste money if it is not necessary.

I got the waterproof mattress pad only b/c EVERYONE told me to get it.
Not sure if it's completely necessary but I threw it on the mattress anyway

definitely necessary to have some sort of protection under the sheets....you do not want to ruin the mattress due to a diaper malfunction

Re: Do we need mattress pads for the crib mattress?
I was wondering the same thing. I made the bed originally without the mattress pad and then after my shower I remade the bed and put the pad down first.
Holy HECK!!! Changing the crib sheets was insane! I had to untie the bumper, lift the mattress out of the crib, take off the sheet, wrestle the mattress pad on, wrestle the crib sheet on, fix the now totally screwed up crib skirt, slide the mattress back into the crib, again, fix the crib skirt, refasten the bumper.
By the time I was done, I was sweating my as* off!

This is why I got the ultimate crib sheet - I read about it in Baby Bargains. It's a sheet with a waterproof back that goes on top of the sheets so if there's an accident, just pull it off and put on another (I got two). It snaps in around the slats. Seemed much easier than wrestling with the bed at night.

you can also layer, waterproof mattress cover, sheet, waterproof mattress cover, sheet
so if there is an accident, all you do is take off the first layer (sheet and waterproof mattress cover) and you have a nice clean sheet under it

Even though the mattress we have has a plastic cover, I still put the mattress cover on it. It seems much more comfy than sleeping on a plastic mattress coating.

100& get one. You do not want a ruined mattress or one smelling like pee or poop if there is an accident - and there probably will be a few!

Re: Do we need mattress pads for the crib mattress?
I put the waterproof pad that is just flat and doesn't actually go around the mattress w/ elastic.
My sheet is also SO tight and my mattress is SOO tight in the crib- I had to have DH put the sheet on by lifting the mattress out. I guess that will just be one of his jobs- at least til I can lift again!

Re: Do we need mattress pads for the crib mattress?
Personally, I would. I got 2 waterproof ones so I always have a back up. IMO they are important and truly save the quality of the matress.

How tight did the sheets & mattress cover get? This is a great idea, and space saver! I'm just worried that the mattress won't fit in the crib after all those layers!

Re: Do we need mattress pads for the crib mattress?
Our kids' mattresses have a protective coating on them- they're not like a regular mattress. Are ours different from other crib mattresses?
I never understood the need for a mattress protector as it's not like they absorb liquid the way my mattress might. Anytime there was "leakage" I'd remove the sheet and wipe the mattress down.

not that tight, totally doable, the sheets and even the protective mattress cover are pretty thin
