Do we call the town?

Our backyard neighbors knocked down their house last spring (2016) and are building a new house. The process is taking FOREVER. It's been 16 months and there's still way more to go. They are a young family and have kids our age, but as they are not living there, we never see them for more than a few seconds once every few months if they stop by to check everything out. There's rarely workers out there.

Now there's MAJOR weeds growing in the back, and they are starting to come over to our side (low picket fence between us). We worked really hard to landscape our back, and we are dreading what it will turn into after the weeds go to seed.

Do I call the town? On the one hand I don't want them to hold a grudge against us being that our kids will be in school together, but on the other hand I don't want my property destroyed. They are never there for us to ask ourselves for them to mow it....

I would make a real effort to try to talk to them when they are there.

You could call the town, but there's a good chance they won't do anything about it anyway.

You could also put up a different fence if that would help.

Thanks. For the last two weeks were tried to make a concerted effort to look out there whenever can to see if they are out there - I told DH the same thing to give ourselves an ultimatum date and try to get them before that date. But we are basically at that point. Last time we saw them was June.

Can you leave a note in their mailbox or on their door?

Next time you see workers, ask for the owners contact info or give them yours to pass along so you can speak to them.

You can also check zillow or block shopper to get their name and narrow it down from there to find a # or something so you can contact them.

They probably don't even realize it's bad back there.

Leave a note. I wouldn't call the town as a first step. If they don't take care of the problem then you call the town. They will know it's you and it will create problems.

Edited to add, I would also be concerned with mosquitos more than the weeds.

I agree with the others, try to get a hold of them. Leave a note, if they don't have a mailbox try to tape it somewhere where hey can see it.

leaving a note is a very good options. Your next step can be contact your local civic group to see if they can assist

Thanks everyone. Leaving a note is a good option. I'll take a walk around the block later with the girls and leave something.

if they are truly weeds.... use weedkiller at the property line.

good fences make great neighbors. put up a taller fence and some privacy trees.

The town won't do anything. I have the same problem in my yard. Leave a note and if they don't reply spray some weed killer over the fence.
