I wouldn't say anything. I don't mean to sound harsh but you told the boy he was too big for it but evidently still let him play with it. I would have taken it away from the kids if I saw them playing with something inappropriate. The mom wasn't there so it's not like she could've done anything about it in the moment. That was your responsibility.

Re: Do I say something?
I definitely wouldn't say anything. they are kids and they are going to break stuff occasionally. if you tell her it's only going to make her feel bad and in my opinion it would just be an awkward conversation.
just don't watch them again.
eta: it was very nice of you to watch her kids though!!!

Thanks everyone! I think you all are right, better to not say anything and just say no when she asks again.
I did put it away in my master bedroom, while I was making lunch he went in and took it, it was already ripped by the time my DS came and got me. Granted I probably should have locked it. I didn't think I would need to go that far after I explained he was too big, I wasn't trying to be mean and not let them have fun. I've never locked my door in the past lol.

Re: Do I say something?
So sorry about the dress. It was very kind of you to watch the kids.
Unfortunately, I agree that you shouldn't say anything. Can't blame a 6 year old that you were responsible for during that time period (even if he should know better).

Re: Do I say something?
lol. I'm the only one who would say something. Never with the intention to replace it, but I always let parents know if their kids were misbehaving. I usually say something like "S/he was having some trouble following the rules today". I guess I usually don't though unless the mom asks how they were. I never say "Your children were god-awful, take them home!" (even if I'm thinking it), but also don't lie and say things were fine when they were not. Honestly, if it were my house, that child would be punished for going into my bedroom and disobeying my rules (like by losing some play time or not getting a special snack that the well behaved kids will have) and I'd let the mom know about that. But then again, I have kids who come every day so we have to have these rules to keep everybody and everything always safe, plus I give warnings beforehand. For just a day or two, and if it was only this one incident, I guess I might just let something like that slide. But I'd never watch them again. lol. I sure do hope she's at least paying you for your time.

Yikes! I agree with the others that you can't really say anything. You may be put in the awkward position of declining to watch them again so I would be prepared for that. If it were me I would be saying a prayer of thanks that my own children aren't so destructive. Can you imagine what that Mom must go through? Lol
Do you have any recommendations? Lol I feel like because I'm a stay at home mom I am asked often to watch kids, and normally I don't mind, but this time I do lol so I have no idea what to say if I really don't have anything else to do. And for sure I am more thankful for my kids than ever before haha

They don't listen to rules at all, the 6 year old had no idea what a time out was after he punched his brother, it was insane lol. And nope, not getting paid which is why I think I was upset that dress was $70 and I can't even replace it until we go back to Disney world, let alone a bunch of the other toys they broke. I keep thinking the saying "no good deed goes unpunished" lol. I just feel awful for my DD.

That's bs. I'd be pissed! I'd let her know he didn't follow rules and not watch them again.

Re: Do I say something?
That stinks about the broken toys & dress. Can you have the dress fixed? Luckily, the school year is almost over & the babysitter should be back soon. I wouldn't watch them again & I would just tell her you have a new commitment a few times a week now (like driving your old aunt somewhere after school) & the other days are your catch up time & can't watch her kids.

Yeah, that's definitely no good. I would be totally honest with the mom and let her know that they were having a rough day and not following rules. That's so awful to not pay somebody for watching your kids, especially when you know they're awful! The dress can't be mended? That would break my heart to see something my DD loves ruined. Definitely don't watch them again if they can't show you any kind of respect while in your house. You don't need a reason, just say that you can't if the mom asks. Simple as that. Or you can say that your days are really busy so it's difficult for you to take in extra kids.

They should have at the very least paid you (she WAS paying the babysitter).
Disneystore is having a sale. It's not the same dress, but it may help.

It sounded to me like the original poster was watching them as a favor bc the other mom was in a tough spot. I would never expect someone to pay me to watch their kids as a favor. i actually would feel really weird if someone offered me money.
I think its normal to help out a neighbor, friend, fellow parent, without expecting to be paid for it.

However, she said they weren't friends. Their kids just are in the same class. I've definitely babysat my BFF's kids and family members without ever expecting money. But for somebody who is simply an acquaintance (not somebody I ever hang out with) who would have normally been paying a babysitter that day, I would expect something for my time. Not that I'd ask for it, but I think it's kind of ballsy for the mom to just assume it's for free. Especially if it's all day and more than one kid. Not worth feeling bitter about and making things uncomfortable though. Just would be nice if she offered. Oh well. Hopefully the dress (or other toys) can be mended
