Do I need a permit
To bump out the side of my house by about 2 feet, to build a closet? I wouldn't need to extend the roofline, just the side.

Most likely, yes. You may even need a variance depending on the code for distance between neighboring property. Call your town's building dept.

Just asked my DH (architect) he said yes since you are going out of the Footprint for the existing house
