Do hedges lose their leaves for winter?

We had a bunch of landscaping done in late Fall, and now that the snow has finally melted, some of my new little hedges have no leaves. Is this normal-- I know you need to know what kind they are, and I am not sure... or did they die because of this horrible winter? I have several of them, and they all look the same.

Some hedges do loose their leaves and some don't. If you can take a photo maybe I can help you identify if it is a problem.
