DMV Help
I think I may have sold my car!! 
So, what steps should I follow so this process goes smootly? I know I have to turn my plates in, but it's going to be so hard to make it there by four  Has anyone ever turned them in by mail (this is an option on the DMV website)? Once the plates are handed in, how do I go about canceling insurance? Do they need proof of the cancel of registration? Any help would be greatly appreciated!! (Obviously, FH is not home to answer these questions!).

You have to turn your plates in before you cancel the insurance. You will receive a green card as proof that you turned in your plates. That card must be forwarded to your insurance company.
The hauppauge and Medford offices are open till 7 on thursdays.

What if I can't get to the DMV tomorrow? Do you think it's SAFE to take the plates off (after dropping the car off at the new owners' house and receiving their money and giving them the title) and then take care of it on Monday??? This whole process is a huge inconvenience

I wouldn't feel comfortable giving them anything until the plates were turned in. IF anything happened with that car while they have it, everything is still in your name.

Can they register the car in their name if I haven't canceled my registration yet? No - right? I wish this whole process was easier...it's more of a headache than I'd like.

No they can't. BUT they can put old plates on it and drive it.
You just never know who you are selling it too.
