Disney with Large Group
For Christmas, my in-laws have generously decided to take the family to Disney for a week beginning of August. There will be 9 "adults" 15 years and up and then my DD, who will be 2. My MIL hasn't booked the hotel yet but she said she's been looking for a place that can accommodate us all staying together, like a house or villa or something. She said she hasn't seen anything like that at an actual Disney resort. Is that true?? I feel like staying at a non-Disney resort might be a hassle with transportation to and from parks but maybe I'm wrong.
Anyone have any insight or tips for traveling with such a large group? I went to Disney a bunch as a kid but haven't been in 12 years. TIA!

There are Disney villa units that can accommodate up to 12. All of the DVC resorts have them. It will be cheaper to rent points through either a private party or through a broker (like Davids).

They may accommodate 12, but that includes people sleeping on pullout couches- I'm not sure if that's what you're looking for. We always stay off site and don't find it a hassle to drive to the parks, but we always rent a car and we also spend more time at our resort then at the parks.

Re: Disney with Large Group
Thank you both for responding! It's tough traveling with so many people because everyone wants to do different things at different times but I'm still excited! I know that we would need at least 2 beds for my in-laws and aunt/uncle. I can't see them wanting to sleep on a pullout. DH and I could probably sleep on a pullout but I dunno if I'd want to do that for a whole week. His cousins are 15, 18, and 22...they can sleep on a pullout haha. DH and I were saying that it would be better to just get separate rooms or 2 suites--1 for his aunt and her family and one for us and his parents. I'll have to talk to my MIL.
What resorts (both onsite and offsite) do you like best??

Re: Disney with Large Group
as far as the rooms go, all DVC grand villas consist of:
1 master bedroom with king sized bed 2 bedrooms with 2 queen sized beds each 1 queen sized pull out in the living room 4 bathrooms
you can look at allears.net for the description of each unit.
There are also 2 bedroom units that consist of a master bedroom (with king sized bed) and a second bedroom with 2 queen beds and a pull out queen bed in the living room.
As far as specific resort, it depends on where you'll be spending the majority of your time.
We've done several large group trips. We have found that the best way to handle it is to not spend every minute together. We made sure we did dinner together every night but during they day, everyone is free to do their own thing.
We no longer do the grand villas with a large group. We find that a combination of the 1 bedroom/2 bedroom and studio units fits our needs better.

Re: Disney with Large Group
We recently stayed at Hilton Bonnet Creek and it was beautiful. We booked through Costco and rate included breakfast buffet which was wonderful.
It's on Disney property, they have bus service to parks which runs on a schedule and was nice on a coach bus but not most efficient. Takes some time to get to parks etc.

Thank you! I'd rather do the separate rooms thing too but I guess it's not really up to me. I travel pretty often and I'm not used to someone else planning my vacations. I don't want to step on my MILs toes so I guess I'll just go with it...or tell DH to talk to her

We've rented houses through all star vacation homes several times and they've been great. Not onsite but you have the advantage a full kitchen, private pool, and usually a gameroom. I think the biggest we did was an 8 bedroom, but they have 9 and 10 too.

Thank you! These houses look amazing! So then I'm guessing you had to rent a car to get around to the parks?

Re: Disney with Large Group
Yes you would need to rent cars. Most of the houses are no more than 5-10 minutes drive though.

I would do Bonnet Creek, it's in the confines of the Disney Compound, and they offer transportation if you don't want to rent a car. A grand villa through Disney is probably going to be like $10,000

I have never stayed there but the treehouses at Saratoga look really cool. They have up to 3 bedrooms.

Thank you! That home is in the same development as some of the houses Phoenix mentioned above. Gorgeous homes and very reasonably priced.
