Disney Pin Exchange

Is it worth buying my 3.5 year old a lanyard and pins before our trip next month or do you think this is something that will be way over his head?

Re: Disney Pin Exchange

It was way over our 3.5 yr old's head. Plus, I didn't want to give him something that could choke him.

Re: Disney Pin Exchange

It could get him talking to Cast Members, but I think an autogrpah book is a better "collection" for a child that age.

You can also get a book and do pressed pennies, but as PP stated that can be a choking hazard

Thanks! Not so worried about the choking hazard- we'll be right there and he's not one to put things in his mouth, just not sure he'll get the concept or really get into it-kwim!

I think he's the perfect age for pressed pennies and it's something he can continue outside of Disney. They love to watch the penny squish!

The cost at Disney is 50¢, plus the penny, so take an M&M minis tube (sorry, you have to eat them) and layer 2 quarters, then a penny, 2 quarters, then a penny, and so on so you're ready to go. We use a Mentos gum box to hold the squished pennies but any small container, or even a baggie, will do.

Enjoy!

That's a great tip - thanks! DS loved looking at the pressed penny machines at the Bronx Zoo so I should be prepared!

I wasn't worried about him putting things in his mouth or choking himself, I was worried about it getting caught on something (a ride or whatever). But still, he would have thought the pins were cool, but definitely wouldn't have wanted to trade or talk to cast members about them. He only got comfortable with the characters themselves after a day when he would give them his book to sign. (But still didn't want them to touch him.)

Re: Disney Pin Exchange

The pennies are also WAYYYYY less expensive!

51cents each vs. $7-13 each. For a 3 year old...definitely the pennies. They sell a book to keep them in and it's pretty snug so he won't lose them. I have one somewhere. I'm trying to find it to blog it, when I do, i'll post a pic.

Re: Disney Pin Exchange

Here's the current penny folder - they change every couple of years. I believe there's also a Tinker Bell one out now too.

This one's actually going to a client today so I had it handy for a couple of cell phone snapshots. Chat Icon

Definitely at your Disney resort and any of the larger gift shops. They're usually located at or near the main registers with the selection of autograph books.

Re: Disney Pin Exchange

If you want to do pins in the future, look for a lanyard that is velcro, that way if it gets caught, it will come apart. Honestly I think the pins are a waste. My son has a bunch, and is too shy to ask to trade so he would just wear them. The locking pinbacks are a must because those regular rubber Mickey head backings just don't stay. I can't even tell you how many pins we lost before I bought the locking backs!

Pennies are sooo much easier! Enjoy!
