Re: dishwasher
I just recently got one (maybe 2 months ago) and had never had one of my own before.
I suggest you go to a store and look at different dishwashers. You'll start to get a feel for what you like and don't like.
After looking I decided I wanted stainless steel inside and out, a certain type of rack, and the controls to be hidden. All things I had no clue about before.
We wound up buying a Bosch. Once we knew what we wanted we started searching for it online and that's how we found the place with the best price and free shipping (Lowe's). I also called a couple places around me to see if they could match the internet price.
My machine came with finish products so that's what I use for now. I figure I'll get into which detergent to use once I figure out how to use all the different options on the washer.

Re: dishwasher
My BIL's father (appliance repairman) says no to the detergent in the plastic pouch (that "disintegrates") He says he has had to fix a lot of d/w that get the plastic residue suck in the drain.
a stainless steel tub (whatever exterior you like for your kitchen is fine) will hold up better - it's sturdier than plastic.

I have a Bosch, it's great ( so quiet!!!).
Oh, I never knew that about the detergent in the plastic. That's what I use, but I guess I'll stop.

Re: dishwasher
Many dishwashers are trying to be more energy efficient by removing the heated dry options. They are using a fan dry instead which doesn't do as good of a job of drying the dishes. You have to take the stuff out of the DW and it's still wet. A lot of the european manufacturers are going this route (like Samsung).
Sorry but I like my heated dry option and will only buy a dishwasher that has one. Kitchen Aid still makes heated dry options.

Re: dishwasher
I just bought a dishwasher after doing a TON of research - because I can't stand getting burned by buying another POS appliance - and I am so happy with it. It's Maytag model MDB8959. I highly recommend this model.
I love this thing!! It has an adjustable upper rack which some people dont care about but I really like it and utilize it. It's stainless steel tub like Erica mentioned. It's quieter than plastic, retains better heat & is safer than plastic. I agree with the PP about the heat dry option. Some of them dont offer it and use a condensation drying method and I have read many many reviews on various sites and models and there are many complaints about wet dishes. Whateve model you get, always use the rinse aid, it helps tremendously.

Re: dishwasher
Make sure you get a tall tub dishwasher, you will have the most amount of space to put in dishes. I believe the other size is standard and it cuts off the bottom portion of the dishwasher, thus limiting how much room you have.
We got a very affordable whirlpool dishwasher with the regular plastic inside and it works great. We never have to use heat to dry the dishes (run it over night and dry by morning), it is quiet (we have a raised ranch and the kitchen is open to the living room), and the utensil basket is on the door so it doesn't take away from the room inside the dishwasher.
Hope this helps.
